## Power Generation Plant Operator

## Position Overview

We are looking for a skilled and safety-conscious Power Generation Plant Operator to join our team and play a vital role in the reliable generation of electrical power. The successful candidate will be responsible for the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of boilers, turbogenerators, and associated plant equipment to meet required load demands. This role suits a detail-oriented individual with a strong technical background who thrives in a high-responsibility, shift-based operational environment. You will be expected to uphold the highest standards of safety, compliance, and equipment performance at all times.

## Key Responsibilities

- Operate power generation plant controls and systems to produce and maintain required electrical load outputs in accordance with operational targets and grid requirements.
- Continuously monitor the operation of power generation plant, interpret instrument readings, and take prompt corrective action in response to abnormal conditions or deviations from set parameters.
- Authorise and implement isolation procedures for high-voltage and low-voltage electrical apparatus and plant, ensuring full compliance with safety regulations and permit-to-work systems.
- Conduct routine operating tests and inspections to verify the integrity and performance of plant equipment, identifying and reporting any faults or irregularities.
- Prepare detailed written reports and maintain accurate records relating to equipment performance, instrument readings, and switching operations.
- Start up, shut down, and manage the load balancing of turbogenerators, boilers, and auxiliary plant in line with established operating procedures.
- Respond effectively to plant alarms, equipment failures, and emergency situations, applying established emergency response procedures to minimise risk and downtime.
- Liaise with maintenance teams, engineers, and supervisors to coordinate planned and unplanned outages, equipment overhauls, and fault rectification.
- Ensure all operational activities are carried out in strict accordance with workplace health and safety legislation, environmental regulations, and site-specific policies.
- Participate in shift handovers, providing clear and accurate communication of plant status, ongoing issues, and any actions taken or required.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying operational inefficiencies and recommending enhancements to plant performance and reliability.

## Required Qualifications & Skills

- Demonstrated experience operating power generation plant, including boilers, turbogenerators, and associated electrical and mechanical systems.
- Sound understanding of high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems, including isolation and switching procedures and permit-to-work processes.
- Ability to read, interpret, and respond accurately to a wide range of plant instrumentation and control systems.
- Strong report-writing skills with the ability to maintain thorough and accurate operational records and logs.
- Solid working knowledge of workplace health and safety obligations relevant to power generation environments.
- Competency in carrying out routine operating tests and conducting equipment inspections.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, make sound decisions during emergency situations, and prioritise competing tasks.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to liaise across operational, engineering, and management teams.
- Willingness and availability to work rotating shift patterns, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.

## Preferred Qualifications

- Trade qualification or certificate in Electrical, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline.
- Certificate III or IV in ESI Generation – Operations or a comparable power industry qualification.
- High Voltage (HV) switching authorisation or equivalent certification.
- Experience operating within a large-scale thermal, gas, hydro, or co-generation power facility.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems or distributed control systems (DCS) used in power generation environments.
- First aid certification current to Australian standards.
