Primary objective
Work collaboratively in delivering high quality educational programs for students with complex disability and additional needs in
partnership with families, community, and professional networks to achieve optimal educational outcomes for these students.
Supporting whole school approaches such as Berry Street Education Model, Read Write Inc, Meaningful Maths and Structured
Teaching.
Context statement
Nemarluk School is a specialist school that caters for students with moderate and severe intellectual and/or multiple disability who
are aged from 3½ to 12 years. Students access programs from classrooms within the Nemarluk campus and/or from satellite classes
within local primary schools. Special Education Support Officers work collaboratively with Teachers to enable students to maximise
their learning within school, home, and community settings. Families and the community are integral to successful partnerships.
The position is a critical member of the educational team in working directly with students and their families to address their
complex educational needs through effective curriculum delivery.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Actively participate, as a team member, in the planning, preparation, implementation and assessment of individualised
educational programs in a special school, pre and primary school and community settings.
2. Administer first aid and provide medication to students in accordance with school policies.
3. Develop and effectively maintain appropriate working relationships with students with disability, families and work colleagues
whilst maintaining confidentiality.
4. Manage and complete a range of administrative tasks including word processing, photocopying, bookbinding, laminating,
classroom displays and Student Administration Management System (SAMS) entry in a timely manner and in an environment
of ongoing change and pressure.
5. Create classroom/student resources utilising specific computer software programs (e.g. board maker, clicker 6,) to implement
programs such as Structured Teaching.
6. Initiate, prioritise and perform work tasks, under limited supervision and in a reliable manner, whilst adhering to school and
Department of Education policies.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current experience working with students in a specialist setting who have significantly below average intellectual functioning,
multiple needs, challenging behaviours, and who have deficits in adaptive functioning in areas such as communication; self-
care; social/interpersonal skills and functional academic skills.
2. Proven ability to communicate effectively with students with disability using a diverse range of communication strategies and
appropriate interpersonal skills, including the use of visuals and schedules.
3. Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and communicating effectively with other school staff, families and
members of the local school community to support productive partnerships.
4. Demonstrated experience in undertaking a range of administrative tasks within the classroom and whole school meeting
timeframes whilst working under pressure and in an environment of change.
Desirable
1. Qualifications or ability to obtain qualifications related to supporting students with disability in educational settings
