Come and join our team at Southern and experience all our District has to offer!

At Southern NSW Local Health District (Southern) we are working to help our communities lead healthy lives. Our mission is that all people across our diverse societies have timely access to the right healthcare in the right setting to maximise their health, wellbeing and independence.

Southern covers a large area of the state, from Goulburn and Crookwell to the Victorian border, and surrounds the ACT on three sides. A total of 44 537sq kms, extending from the pristine beaches of the NSW South Coast, the farmlands of the Southern Tablelands, across the picturesque Monaro and spectacular Snowy Mountings of the Great Dividing Range.

We are home to five large Aboriginal nations – the Gundungurra, Ngambri, Ngunnawal, Ngarigo and Yuin people. Southern NSWLHD comprises of four Networks - Tablelands is centred around Goulburn, Monaro centred around Queanbeyan and Cooma, the Coastal Network located in the far south-east corner of NSW, and the Integrated Care Network.

Where you'll be working - Queanbeyan

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and suitably qualified FACEM to lead the emergency department team at Queanbeyan District Hospital.

Queanbeyan Hospital and Health Service is part of the Monaro Network. It has 29 inpatient beds and offers emergency medicine; surgery (orthopaedics, gastroenterology, gynaecology, general surgery and obstetrics); inpatient services including close observation, maternity, surgical and medical beds; renal dialysis; pathology collection; pharmacy; and medical imaging (x-ray, CT and ultrasound).

The Queanbeyan ED sees approximately 27000 presentations per year. It has a relatively low admission ratter of 6% and a transfer rate of 5-6% due to it being bypassed for STEMI, Stroke, Trauma. 23% of presentations are children under 16 with 25% of them being under 3 years of age. 7.8% of presentations are indigenous.

The ED is currently staffed with senior doctors; there are plans to introduce a junior doctor for 2 shifts a day on weekdays only for 2027.

There has been a recent recruitment drive for emergency specialists and by 2027 we should have a total of 4FTE Staff specialist FACEMs.

There is significant opportunity to attain core accreditation with ACEM for registrar training.

There are good collegial relationships with the other EDs in Southern. As such many of the Emergency specialists that work in Queanbeyan will also provide services in Cooma, South East regional Hospital and Goulburn Base hospital. This will allow those hospitals to apply for and attain accreditation for blended supervision of ACEM trainees during their mandatory rural term starting in 2027

In terms of collegial relationships there are excellent relationships with the rural generalist inpatient VMOs many of which also do shifts in the ED. There is no conflict regarding admissions to the hospital as all consultations are senior doctor to senior doctor.

The Queanbeyan ED has excellent relationships with TCH ED and many of our doctors’ work in both sites

It is an exciting time to be a director at Queanbeyan hospital. What it needs now is an excellent training program and accreditation. If your passion is to provide better healthcare to a whole district rather than one-on-one on the floor, then this is the position for you.

The split in work is 20-25 hours a week managerial/leadership and the remainder of the FTE clinical

This position would be excellent for those candidates who have a passion for providing the highest standard of training and clinical care. It would also be an excellent job for those who look to spreading their wings in learning to be a leader. Mentoring for the right candidate would be available
