Resident Medical Officer - General Rotations
Lismore Base Hospital & Richmond Network


A rare opportunity has arisen at Lismore Base Hospital and its peripheral sites for rotational Resident Medical Officer (PGY2+) positions for the current clinical year. This is a full-time role, and our ideal candidates will be able to commence duties from 7 September 2026, however contract dates can be negotiated for the right candidate.

The successful applicant will gain valuable experience to provide quality medical care to patients in a complex clinical environment, as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This includes the assessment and management of patients across several clinical departments under the supervision of senior practitioners whilst developing broad skills in clinical decision making and practice.

Current available terms for the 2026 clinical year include: Emergency Medicine (Casino Hospital), Rehabilitation Medicine (Ballina Hospital), Psychiatry / Mental Health (Lismore), Hospital in the Home, Whole of Hospital Relief (Lismore)

As a teaching hospital, LBH supports its Junior Medical Officers with weekly protected teaching for prevocational trainees and a JMO Education schedule including clinical case presentations, Grand Rounds Whole Hospital, and department specific meetings and education sessions. We work closely with the University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH) who also facilitates teaching and simulation sessions for medical staff.

Where you'll be working
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.

The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. This area is blessed by year-round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter. From lush hinterland villages, to Mount Warning, national parks, and sparkling beaches, the region is full of natural wonders and vibrant destinations all within a short drive from Lismore.

What you'll be doing

The purpose of the position is to provide medical care and support, as part of a multi-disciplinary team that is consistent with the level of clinical competency and experience of the appointed trainee. This includes the assessment and management of patients across several clinical departments under the supervision of senior practitioners whilst developing broad skills in clinical decision making and practice.


  • Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role (please address these in your response)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
  • Good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
