Join our Downer Professional Services team and play a key role in delivering complex defence and national security projects that safeguard Australia’s future.
Downer Professional Services comprises of three business units our Technical, Advisory, and Capability consulting practice, and Team Downer , which partners with CASG and NSSG as a major service provider to Defence . Together, we are a multi-disciplinary advisory and delivery partner of choice for clients across Defence and National Security.
We currently have an opportunity for a Systems Manager in Canberra to work on Joint projects .
What You’ll Do

This role offers a broad scope, with key role responsibilities including:

  • Lead AusPEX sustainment: Manage application support and deliver CAF16 capability outcomes aligned to key governance plans.
  • Drive system lifecycle management: Plan, implement and oversee system changes, upgrades, and new capability integration.
  • Own stakeholder coordination: Align sustainment efforts across internal teams, vendors, and Defence stakeholders.
  • Control budget & contracts: Manage AusPEX financials and ensure supplier performance meets contractual obligations.
  • Mitigate risk & ensure compliance: Identify risks, develop recovery strategies, and support security accreditation and governance requirements.

What You’ll Bring

  • AusPEX / domain expertise: Demonstrated system knowledge or aircrew currency management experience.
  • Proven system management: Minimum 5+ years managing complex systems in operational environments.
  • Strong project & stakeholder skills: Experience in project delivery with effective communication and interpersonal capability.
  • Defence-aligned technical training: Exposure to systems engineering, configuration, technical data, and materiel safety frameworks.
  • Risk & governance capability: Understanding of risk management practices and Defence capability lifecycle processes.
Due to the nature of the work, you are required to currently hold and maintain an AGSVA Security clearance as required by the Commonwealth. In some instances, compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements may also be an inherent requirement.
