Trainee Clinical Coder
- Temporary Part-Time – 18.75 hours per week, up to 12 months, with right of renewal for a further 12 months subject to meeting required Clinical Coding audit standards.

About The Role
Join the Limestone Coast Local Health Network as a Trainee Clinical Coder and develop specialised skills within our Clinical Coding team.
Working under the guidance of the Clinical Coding Documentation Auditor & Educator, you will undertake structured training to accurately translate medical and procedural information into ICD-10-AM codes. Your work will contribute to reliable health data, hospital planning, research and Activity Based Funding.
As your skills develop, you will progress to increasingly complex patient episodes while building your coding accuracy, efficiency and knowledge of clinical documentation and coding standards.
This position is offered for 12 months, with right of renewal for a further 12 months subject to Clinical Coding audits achieving an error rate of less than 13%.
About You
You are an organised and analytical individual with an interest in clinical coding and health information. You can interpret detailed information, work accurately and meet deadlines while contributing positively within a team. You are committed to learning, professional development and building the knowledge required to deliver accurate clinical coding outcomes.
To succeed in the Trainee Clinical Coder role, you will:
- Have successfully completed a recognised HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding or equivalent, with demonstrated competency in current ICD-10-AM coding; or be nearing completion of a recognised HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding where sponsored by LCLHN or SA Health Health Information Governance Unit.
- Demonstrate organisational, analytical and numeracy skills, with the ability to integrate, interpret and apply information to produce accurate coded clinical data.
- Have knowledge of the current ICD-10-AM and ACHI Classification Systems, National and South Australian Coding Standards and relevant medical terminology.
- Demonstrate the ability to prioritise workloads, meet deadlines, use initiative and work effectively as part of a team.
- Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with medical, nursing, administrative and other health professionals.
About Clinical Coding
The Limestone Coast Local Health Network Clinical Coding team provides an accurate and effective clinical coding service in accordance with Department of Health and Wellbeing Coding Reporting Standards, Australian National Coding Standards, South Australian Coding Standards and ICD-10-AM classifications.
Clinical Coders translate diagnoses and procedures documented within patient medical records into standardised clinical codes. This information supports statistical analysis, epidemiology, hospital planning, research, quality patient care and the assignment of Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (AR-DRGs), which contribute to Activity Based Funding.
Trainee Clinical Coders are supported through structured training, mentoring, regular audits and assessments to progressively develop their knowledge, coding accuracy and ability to manage increasingly complex patient episodes.

Conditions of Employment
- A current Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) for employment involving unsupervised contact with vulnerable groups is required for this position.
