The City Strategy and Urban Planning Branch is a team of 38 people that provide the long-term strategic direction that shapes the City of Melbourne’s future. Through research, foresight and strategic urban planning, the branch guides sustainable growth, manages city change and helps deliver the City of Melbourne’s long-term vision.
As part of our new operating model, we are building a team of talented professionals who are passionate about city shaping, evidence-based decision making and creating positive outcomes for City of Melbourne's communities.
About the Role
As an Urban Research and Foresight Officer, you will contribute to shaping Melbourne’s future by delivering research, analysis and strategic insights that support long-term city planning. Working as part of a collaborative team, you will analyse emerging trends, urban issues and future opportunities, helping to inform evidence-based decision-making and future-focused strategies that support a liveable, inclusive and sustainable city.
A Little More About the Role
- Contribute to research and analysis that helps shape Melbourne’s future, identifying emerging trends, risks and opportunities to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Support urban foresight activities, including horizon scanning, future scenario development and the creation of insights that inform long-term city strategies and planning.
- Work across a range of strategic projects, assisting with the delivery of research outputs and integrating findings into policy, planning and city-shaping initiatives.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, supporting engagement, consultation and information-gathering activities that strengthen strategic outcomes.
- Develop your expertise in urban research and foresight, applying analytical frameworks and methodologies while contributing to high-quality reports, presentations and continuous improvement initiatives.

About You
You are an early career Officer with:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in urban research, foresight, analytics, geography, economics, social policy or a related field
- Foundational understanding of how land use, environment, design and community needs shape cities
- Demonstrated interest in research, analysis, foresight or strategic planning, with the ability to undertake research and analyse data, and trends.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills coupled with the ability to prepare clear and accurate documentation
- Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams while building positive stakeholder relationships and delivering high-quality customer-focused outcomes.
