Banana Farm Worker

Location: Cowley, Far North Queensland
Employment Type: Full-time (38 hours per week)
Salary: AUD $70,000 – $75,000 per annum plus superannuation

The Role

S & K Family Trust, located in Cowley, Far North Queensland, is seeking motivated and reliable Banana Farm Workers to join its team on a full-time basis.

The successful candidates will perform a range of routine banana farming activities, including soil preparation, cultivation, planting, irrigation, pruning and general crop management. The role may also involve the safe application of pesticides and fungicides to manage weeds, pests and diseases.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with the Supervisor/Farm Manager to receive daily work instructions and assigned tasks.
  • Patrol, inspect and report on the condition of banana crops.
  • Undertake soil preparation, cultivation and crop maintenance activities, including planting, thinning, weeding and hoeing.
  • Perform crop management activities including stringing, de-leafing, de-suckering and bell injecting.
  • Erect growing supports and protective structures, including staking and bagging fruit bunches.
  • Operate, monitor and maintain water supply and irrigation systems to support crop growth.
  • Maintain, clean and operate farm infrastructure and equipment, including sheds, fences, plant, water supply and irrigation systems.
  • Operate and maintain farm machinery used for cultivating, fertilising and spraying crops.
  • Apply pesticides and fungicides safely to control weeds, insects, fungal diseases and pests.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, biosecurity and workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements.
  • Assist with harvesting and packing shed duties as required.
  • Perform any other duties as reasonably required by the business from time to time.

Requirements

  • Certificate I in Horticulture (or higher), or a minimum of 12 months of relevant farm work experience.
  • Physical fitness suitable for manual farm work.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently when required.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and workplace health and safety practices.
