Full job description
An exciting volunteer opportunity is available for a motivated, reliable and organised Legal Assistant / Paralegal to support a busy barrister’s practice.
This role offers hands-on experience across a range of jurisdictions, including family and criminal jurisdictions.
The successful applicant will provide both legal and practical support, including:
- Drafting legal documents, correspondence and court materials.
- File management and maintaining accurate records.
- Liaising with clients, solicitors, courts and external agencies.
- Preparing briefs and court files.
- Managing diaries, appointments and deadlines.
- General legal and administrative support.
- Assisting with the transport, organisation and set-up of court materials and equipment.
A key aspect of this role is accompanying counsel to court and client appointments. The successful applicant will be required to drive between locations, including South East Melbourne, Dandenong, Melbourne CBD and Broadmeadows, and provide transport to counsel as part of the working day. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
The role also involves practical assistance, including carrying and organising legal files, court books, laptops and other materials required for court appearances.
Essential Requirements
- Current driver’s licence.
- Reliable, roadworthy motor vehicle.
- Willingness to drive as part of the role.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Professional presentation and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality.
Desirable
- Law student, law graduate, or experience as a legal assistant or paralegal.
This position offers exceptional practical experience and close mentoring within a busy advocacy practice, making it an ideal opportunity for someone looking to develop their litigation and courtroom skills.
Pay: $50.00 – $500.00 per year
