About the Role:
In this role, you will provide technical support for classes and student project work across the School’s photographic facilities, including studios, darkrooms and laboratories. You will guide students in the safe and effective use of equipment, processes and techniques, while supporting teaching, research and engagement activities. This role is also responsible for helping maintain safe, well-organised and fully functioning studio and teaching environments. Depending on your skills and experience, you may work across multiple facilities or locations within the Faculty to support operational needs and changing workloads.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Provide technical instruction and practical guidance to students during classes, including the safe use of tools, equipment and techniques.
  • Conduct safety inductions and ensure staff and students follow health and safety requirements at all times.
  • Prepare materials, facilities and resources in advance for teaching and research activities, ensuring they are organised and ready for use.
  • Develop and update user guides, reference materials and relevant online resources.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures covering safety, hazardous substances, equipment and workspaces.
  • Manage equipment loan processes.
  • Work with academic staff to maintain class procedures and workbooks.
  • Maintain general and specialist studios, workshops and equipment, including safety checks, servicing and repairs.
  • Install, test, monitor, fault-find and repair equipment within the area.
  • Carry out routine troubleshooting and basic equipment maintenance.
  • Advise staff and students on purchasing equipment and consumables for teaching and research.
  • Monitor stock levels, order materials, consumables and equipment, and participate in stocktakes.
  • Participate in multi-skilling and professional development to keep technical knowledge current with advances in the discipline.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and recommend changes to the line manager.
  • Support Faculty initiatives and events such as open days, end-of-year exhibitions and design reviews.
  • Use equipment booking systems to schedule resources fairly for students while supporting teaching and research needs.
  • Undertake other duties reasonably required that are consistent with the responsibilities of the role.
Who we are looking for/Selection Criteria:
  • Technical support is provided for class activities and student project work associated with the photographic areas within the school, including photographic studios, darkrooms and laboratories.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the safe and efficient management and operation of photographic studios, including continuous and strobe lighting equipment and accessories.
  • Operation and maintenance of photographic darkroom facilities.
  • Operation and maintenance of digital photographic printers, and experience in large format printing.
  • Facilitate and manage photographic equipment loans to staff and students.
  • Facilitate and manage booking of studio spaces for staff and students.
Desirable
  • Experience with MS office suite, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Adobe photo editing software, Photoshop and Lightroom
Role Requirements:
  • As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia to be considered
  • Part-time hours at 0.8FTE (30 hours per week) – To be discussed in interview
