A cover letter is a document that you can provide with your resume when applying for a job. Cover letters give you an opportunity to show your skills and express your interest in the role. Being able to write a good cover letter can help you when applying for your first job. In this article, we discuss how to write a cover letter as a high school student, provide a helpful template and explore some example cover letters.
What is a cover letter for a high school student?
A cover letter for a high school student is a document that highlights a student's skills and relevant experience. A cover letter shows your interest to potential employers. A cover letter for a high school student is typically three paragraphs long and contains a greeting and closing line. These cover letters usually focus on skills and career goals, rather than prior job experience. Each job application requires a personalised cover letter addressing the specific company and hiring manager.
How to write a cover letter for a high school student
You can use the following steps as a guide when writing your cover letter:
1. Include your personal details
The first step is to put your personal details and contact information at the top of the cover letter. It's a good idea to make this section clear and easy to read. This ensures the hiring manager has your contact information. For an emailed cover letter, include your email address, phone number and full name. For a paper cover letter, include your name, postal address, phone number and email address.
2. Greet the hiring manager
If you know the hiring manager's name, you can address them by name. Use the formal form of their name unless you know them personally, for example, Mr or Ms Smith. If you're unsure of who the recipient may be, you can use a formal greeting such as To whom it may concern. Most formal greetings are appropriate for cover letters.
3. Express your interest
Use the first paragraph of your cover letter to express your interest in the job and provide some reasons why you may be a suitable candidate. This paragraph can also be a good place to mention your career goals and how they align with the position.
4. List your skills and relevant experience
The second paragraph of your cover letter can detail your key skills and achievements. If you have any experience relating to the role, you may also include those. If you've previously had employment, you can detail relevant responsibilities in those roles. Employers generally expect most high school students to have no prior work experience.
5. Thank the hiring manager
In your last paragraph of the cover letter, you might indicate how you share the same values as the hiring business. You may also include specific aspects of the business that encouraged you to apply. In the last sentence, thank the hiring manager for their time and consideration.
6. Include a professional closing
Once you have written your third and final paragraph, close the letter with a professional sign-off. You can start by writing a closing line, such as Best regards or Kind regards, followed by your name on the next line. Underneath your closing line, you may mention attached documents, such as a resume or reference letter.
7. Review your letter
Once you finish writing your letter, it can be a good idea to review it to identify and fix any errors. You may also consider letting someone else view your cover letter before you submit it. A friend or family member might provide you with some constructive feedback or suggestions on how to improve the letter.
