Truly the worst job I've had. Turned me off retail and Adidas
Took a month for the store to finalise my hiring process. Which basically meant I missed out on other job opportunities while I was waiting. I found out this was a common practice for Adidas. Finally started the job really hopeful and excited to be working for a brand that I like. Quickly realised how bad the situation was at the Perth outlet store. My "training" was never officially completed which led to me being confused and never able to answer questions customers had about products. The actual amount of stock that we had at our store was so overwhelming that we could never find items that we knew we probably had, but could never physically reach it. More experienced staff would constantly comment on how the back warehouse should not be in this kind of condition. I then learnt that we were basically the dumping ground for all Adidas stock in the country. We felt completely neglected as a store.
The main issue that I ran into while working here was the fact that a 2ic manager had been hired who was completely unqualified for their position. This was so blatantly obvious to everyone who worked there, that we completely ceased to work effectively as a team. This manager had no intention of helping staff or using their position to make head office know how bad the stock situation was at our location. To say that there was a divide between this manager and the rest of the staff is an understatement. Issues such as arriving late to work (staff and customers would have to wait for them to arrive as we didn't have a key), walking out of the store unannounced, arguing with customers, calling staff out in front of other people, refusing to complete managerial roles, sitting in the office for their entire shift to name a few.
To make matters worse. Half way into my time at this store. A new Store manager was hired which was going to be the answers to our prayers. They had experience at Nike which was really encouraging. But we were wrong because nothing improved in the store. Some visual merchandising changes happened but as far as stock level improvements, training or team building, there was nothing. This new Store Manager was so clearly insecure that there was constantly drama concerning themselves and staff. Imagine someone in a position of power that can dictate how many shifts you get that week based on whether you said something to offend them. Someone who would use scare tactics and ambush you with accusations when you come into a shift. Thankfully I was able to get out of this place before the Christmas period because it was literally driving me insane. I really did think that my general mental health was declining while working here. Staff that quit while I was there would say how much better they felt after they left.
Because we were an outlet store, some of the sales we held such as 50% off would bring in the biggest crowds of people, especially on weekends. This would be fine if we had an extra 6 people working these days, except we didn't. This meant we'd be completely overwhelmed so the clean up and recovery of the store would take a whole Monday. Rostering suitable amounts of staff on was a huge issue. Being paid incorrectly was also common because we had no automatic way of signing in or out. It was all recorded and submitted manually which would lead to discrepancies between staff and managers.
On average I'd work 40 hours a week. I enjoyed working as many hours as I could because I really wanted the money. The pay rate increase for Sundays and overtime was really good. We were allowed a free uniform and could pick out anything from the store which was cool. Most of the sales staff that worked there were decent people and we all shared a commonality which was we despised our Store Manager and 2ic. This store had so many issues it was unbelievable. If you are thinking of applying for a job here just because you need the money. I would ask you to seriously reconsider.

It was a terrible environment and we as a store received little to no assistance from the rest of the company because of how isolated perth is and the general decline of brick and mortar retail stores

Working in the sports industry is highly engaging. However, remember that adidas is a global multi-national and as fun and engaging as the workplace can be, being an MNC inevitably means that there will be cumbersome processes, decision-making, offshore interference and micro-management like any other global company.

Super fun environment, my manager was awesome but assistant manager was a bit uninformed and gave conflicting tasks at times.
Discount was awesome, training was paid and the clothes are truly something to vouch for.
Great company, like any it has its pitfalls and cons but the pros outweigh that. It was easy to balance work and life, I felt my wage was more than just and fair.
Job security as a Christmas casual stands for itself but they do keep you in the talent pool post hiring you.
