Arup: Design for a better living
Overview
We shape a better world
We are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. We shape a better world.
Founded in 1946 with an initial focus on structural engineering, Arup first came to the world’s attention with the structural design of the Sydney Opera House, followed by its work on the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Arup has since grown into a truly multidisciplinary organisation. Most recently, its work for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing has reaffirmed its reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable designs that reinvent the built environment.
Arup brings together broad-minded individuals from a wide range of disciplines and encourages them to look beyond the constraints of their own specialisms.
This unconventional approach to design springs in part from Arup’s ownership structure. The firm is owned in trust on behalf of its staff. The result is an independence of spirit that is reflected in the firm’s work, and in its dedicated pursuit of technical excellence.

Our Culture
Discover life at Arup
If you are the voice that says "why?" and "what if?" and "why not?", you are already an Arupian.
We are a community of intellectually curious minds.
Work at Arup is measured on two dimensions: it must be interesting, and it must be rewarding. We collaborate to make each other better. Constructive debate and restless inquiry are our shared passions. Imagining the future for our clients and the communities they and we serve demands this. Our independence allows it.
As an Arupian, you match high technical achievement (whatever your field, in project management every bit as much as engineering) with the ability to move beyond accepted answers. To take a journey that exercises your, and our, greatest asset: your curiosity.

Career Development
Training, Mentoring and Coaching
Personal development is at the heart of our determination to be an employer of choice. We train, coach and mentor our people. To pass professional qualifications. In leadership, in management. To achieve their ambitions.
We use every channel from e-learning to skills networks, tutorials, face-to-face. And we fuel those channels with a substantial proportion of our profits each year, reinvesting in the intellectual capital of everyone who works here.
No external training consultant knows more about our disciplines than the leaders in their fields that already work here. As mentors, as coaches, part of their job is to inspire, inform and guide you, giving you exposure to the best in the business.
Career Mobility
Going to work can be a journey of exploration and discovery. We use our international presence and range of disciplines to put those career choices in your reach. For some, this freedom has taken them to different parts of the world. For others, it has taken them from one aspect of the firm’s work to another.
Geographically, across our 96 offices we have five times more people on international placement than the average firm.
Within disciplines, you choose your route. Technical or commercial. Client-facing or internal. Leading projects, leading people or leading geographies. In your original discipline or exploring something new. Many people have multiple careers within Arup. Your interests may even lie outside of our current competencies. For example, we sponsored a colleague interested in fire engineering to study his new interest in Sweden, returning to set up a new practice area. That open-mindedness and spirit of adventure is precisely what has allowed us to grow.
Skills Networks
Some claim the best way to learn is on the job. But what if you could talk with someone who’d done that job before?
Our 50 skills networks exist to help you share and build your professional knowledge and experience. As well as technical disciplines, they cover HR, transactions, logistics. Over 60% of people in Arup regularly use these networks to learn more, faster. Through open collaboration. Through dialogue. As a contributor. The networks are open to all in Arup and give you access to like-minded professionals with a deep practical interest in your subject.
