Marine Electrician/ Crew Training Instructor II (Current Employee) –  Mobile, AL2 October 2018
Its a good place to work. Can be hot in the summer and cold in winter month. Some times you have to deal with the good ol boy club. Once you make a name for yourself you can move up fairly easy on the production side. Once salary there is very little upward movement.

Productive and rewarding career
Shipfitter/Welder (Current Employee) –  Mobile, AL8 November 2017
A typical work day at Austal is non-stop,fast-paced,and its a great place to learn and grow your career.I learned a lot and was rewarded for my efforts with pay and advancement. The faster you learn the faster you move up.
Management was good about getting you the things you need to get your job done. They are there to answer any questions and give you any advice about your career and or job advice.
Everybody there is a team player and ready to help in a seconds notice.Everyone gets along well and are very friendly.
The hardest part of the job is the weather conditions you have to work in. Its either very cold or very hot.
The most enjoyable part of the job is to see the finished project ( a navy ship) rolling down the river and into our Navys Fleet of ships

Great benefits, but terrible working conditions and preferential treatment
Structural Fitter/Welder (Current Employee) –  Mobile, AL24 July 2017
Austal USA is a good co. as far as benefits go. But the working conditions are unsafe for the most part, there is a system of preferential treatment, and rules that are only implicated for some. The playing field is not even and it is extremely hard to move up and better yourself unless you have relatives or are in really good with the shift foremans or managers. Once you have hit your ceiling at whatever position it is you are in, thats pretty much it. There is no incentive, encouragement, or even a recommendation process that happens. They simply do not care about you and would just rather no one ever speak up for themselves. Also the company went to a "mandatory rotation" from day shift to night shift. Only to find out it was only mandatory for some of the crews. And these crews are expected to work in 3 month rotations. Which means 3 straight months on night shift...which means half of the year...which means half of a family man or woman life away from their families.Should never have called it mandatory if it was never intended for the entire company.
Pros
benefits
Cons
poor conditions. too long on night shift

If you are a white female your chances of working here are slim to none!!! If you have more education the they hire men and foreign women and men. The way they hire is more who you know not what you know.
