Not great, and not for everyone
Private (Former Employee) - Queensland - 16 November 2022
Originally joined to challenge myself, do something different and contribute via disaster relief, bush fire and flood assistance locally and internationally. Wanted to join the medical core but was persuaded to join the infantry as needed, and could change later. This didn't happen because living 2 hours from a Base that has Medical core staff is just too far to be practical. Honestly I didn't enjoy much at all of the experience. Days can be long, sometimes 16-20 hrs with little breaks. The pay was pretty bad, around $22 an hour (tax free) while training, $21 an hour when finished. Daily rate capped to around $160 without special allowances. Training seemed to be trying to cram as much into a short space of time as possible whist often using worn at outdated equipment. I believe the average turn over for a recruit is around 6 months and can understand why. Personel are of the best physical health, and mostly of higher academic level, yet are treated rather poorly and underpaid for the commitment and sacrifice required. although the ADF boasts about family first, I never saw that, and found you were expected to commit more and more as time went on, when really the Reserves accounted for such a small part of my busy life. It must be said that there are some very good people in the ADF, and others that should not be there. The culture is pretty bad, which is exactly the oppose to everything we are taught and have lived in for the last few generations. I was hoping for a positive learning and supporting environment. Not so, it was shotgun learning, based on fear and intimidation -

productive and fun
Driver specialist (Current Employee) - Wollongong NSW - 5 September 2019
A typical night time parade involves weapons handling, administration tasks and sometimes a PT session. It is a very productive work day where there is always something to do.
