Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Employee Review

Disappointing salary and career advancement, but great satisfaction providing a valued public service

As an employee, BOM provides satisfaction by contributing to a highly valued service to the public. There are still some good conditions such as 15.6% superannuation, sick leave, shift penalty rates and flexible working hours. On the negative side are lower salaries compared to similar agencies and professional roles, a history of cuts to conditions, restructures and freezes on career advancement, low annual wage rises, contractor outsourcing, lack of funds to adequately maintain equipment and staff levels, etc due to conservative government policies over the past decade that have left many staff disgruntled or resigned.

Bureau of Meteorologists

The pay is good, management is appalling. If you are a meteorologist you're laughing, if not you need to be careful. Nepotism is rife so you need to suck up to the bosses. No leadership or leaders, just bosses who boss people around. Problem is they promote their own and aren't the right people. They pat themselves on the back and then wonder what to do and look for people to blame when they can't get things done. Everyone who leaves never goes back to Christmas lunches because usually they leave with a bad taste after the way there were treated, even people with 30-40 years service in all sections.

Pros

Can be interesting if you like the weather.

Not good

They understand the meteorology but not the business. Driving a restructuring by not looking at the detail is going to present organizational stress.
