Company is destroyed
Technology (Former Employee) - Australia - 9 September 2021
BHP has slowly been destroyed from the inside. Getting anything done is next to impossible. So much red tape and pointless process. God help you if you ever have a problem with pays or anything else of that personal nature. Try getting in touch with HR. Seriously ring the HR number to see what BHP has actually become for their own employees. Don't believe the glossy brochures or TV ads, this company has gone from great to an absolute dogs breakfast in the last decade.
Pros
Money
Cons
The urge to stab oneself in the face

Fun place to work
Production Technician (Former Employee) - Pilbara WA - 4 August 2021
Be punctual, be alert on safety and hazards, be aware of your work areas, be clear in your verbal correspondence to radio control communications, be nice to people, attitudes saves lives , your safety is others safety
Pros
Beautiful comfortable mining atmosphere everything you need is in camp
Cons
Hours are long But reasonable personal issues from home life can interfere, talking to your management is the best insurance of safety and awareness

No experienced workers left to learn from.
Supervisor, Mining, Training department, Fixed plant and blast crew (Former Employee) - Pilbara sites - 26 July 2021
22 years around and with BHP in various leadership and front line roles. Not a good work place for males of any age. Too many people trying to get out of there current job role so no accountability and no experienced workers left to help with on job coaching. Great place to learn how to get out of work and no leader support for help because they have no experience doing the tasks. Imagine going to school to learn how to rebuild and engine and your teacher is a qualified hairdresser. What you see on the posters, ads and public propaganda is far from what the company does for its people. The pay and stability were the only things BHP had going for it now both are gone. Pay has slowly dropped to not even competitive and stability has gone because leaders discipline workers for speaking up out of frustration for having no direction or competent senior people to get training from.
Pros
It’s a job if you can’t get another one.
Cons
No support, no one to learn from money is terrible for how long your away from home, long work hrs for anyone outside of an office.

What is said and what is done are often different
Supply Manager (Former Employee) - Perth WA - 7 May 2021
A company full of high paid engineers and clicky senior managers. Their mammoth size allows them to get away with it. Culturally very poor. They are lucky they have good people on the ground doing the actual grunt work while more senior managers have no idea.
Pros
Pay well
Cons
Too much profit which hides too many problems.

Very non productive. Dishonest and unskilled managers.
Production Technician (Former Employee) - Newman - 30 April 2021
Managers not there for the job or the people or the company. They fabricate outcomes. Investigations are driven by the desired outcome. Weak and easily intimidated by skills and knowledge. Purple circles. Poorest culture of any place i have ever worked. They are not watching you are being watched. Try it see for yourself.
Pros
No free lunch
Cons
Dishonesty

Mine Controller (Former Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 16 December 2020
Ups and downs. With all large businesses, there are some amazing experiences and those not so great. Most importantly in this business is to stay positive.

Productive and collaborative
Control Systems Engineer (Former Employee) - Olympic Dam SA - 26 October 2020
Work culture at BHP is brilliant. After migrating from overseas got this first opportunity to work in Control Systems, so it was really exciting for me an got to learn a lot of new things during my short tenure there at Olympic Dam.

Awful
Since initiating a woke business framework they have promoted a number of women into management positions who are exceptionally inexperienced in management and the work itself. To accommodate bullying, lying and manipulation by this "charming group of ladies" accepted by upper management. Don't be fooled by their "code of ethics". They don't abide by it and will threaten you if they have to. You will be surprised by their antics, as those who reside in the upper echelons are frightened to lose their overpaid positions. In some teams - not all - you will encounter what can only be described as a highly toxic environment. Dysfunctional, incompetence, mediocrity etc. It blew my socks off as to how bad it was. Waste and bureaucracy was everywhere. HR as well - so don't bother going there.
Pros
Above market salary
Cons
If you want to see how truly bad a corporate can be go to BHP. The waste, the incompetence, the bullying by people who claim to be oh so woke!

Best Workplace
FPE / HSE Liaison Officer - HSEC Systems (Former Employee) - Roxby Downs SA - 8 October 2020
I enjoyed working with BHP and excelled my skills. Management is cooperative and colleagues are helpful. A typical day starts early morning and finishes by the evening. Mostly it is a very busy day with dozens of tasks to be completed. It gets busier during the shutdowns but then gets a little slow once shutdowns are over. Best place ever to work at Roxby downs Mines.
Pros
On Job Training
Cons
Some times challenging

Very stressful place to work with a toxic culture among a number of people.
PM (Former Employee) - Olympic Dam SA - 23 September 2020
Worst place and culture that i ever worked in. Systems were not good and difficult to use. Had no induction and little assistance in the few weeks when i started. Project i was then given were scope wrongly under budgeted and under scheduled. Then to change these things when you are new in this company is almost impossible. They put safety, safety, safety onto the people in everything and then you walk around a plant that has holes in pipes with product and pure acid dripping out. The plant integrity and safety is a joke but everyone is to work safely. If the company culture and management was realistic about safety the plants would not be in such a mess. Let alone the bullying culture within certain management people who want a promotion and will doing anything to make themselves look good at the expense of others.
I hope other parts of the business are better than what i experienced and i am sure there are a lot of good people working in the place as well.
Pros
Good compensation.
Cons
Toxic work culture of people and contractors.

Friendly, supportive people.Very safety minded, happy to be apart of the company
Truck Operator (Current Employee) - Goonyella Riverside - 9 September 2020
The people were helpful and supportive at all times, workmates are great and work as a team. I'm very happy to be apart of this company. The days and nights are long but in the mining Industry that's the name of the game.. don't do it if your heart isn't set on it.
Pros
Good pay, workmates, love operating the equipment
Cons
not really much to be honest..

A explicitly neat place to work.
Lead operations team (Current Employee) - Miami, AZ - 27 July 2020
Typical days start early which is refreshing! I learned it is your word versus the immediate supervisors in this situation I had a poor supervisor who I would not recommend. Otherwise, they treated you well but didn't seem like any room for advancement. Challenge was minimal, very 'woman' driven workplace which was a different experience for me.

Productive workplace with a strong 'us and them' culture. Contractors vs permanents.
Id Rather Not (Former Employee) - Perth WA - 12 July 2020
I enjoyed my time at BHP, however, the culture needs a drastic overhaul. More than 80% of workers are contractors, and to me, that is purely disgusting in today's world. There is no security at BHP. None whatsoever. The 'us vs them' mentality is permeated throughout the culture at BHP and needs to be changed if they are going to attract a loyal and dedicated workforce. The world's biggest mining company posted a US$12b profit in the first quarter of 2020, and then proceeded to make over 2000 employees redundant. What kind of message does that say to you?
Pros
Working remotely 'culture'
Cons
Massive amount of contractors. They do not value their staff.

Office Environment
Project Specialist E&I SME (Former Employee) - Adelaide SA - 8 June 2020
My experience with BHP has been most rewarding. Challenging documentation to prevent plant operation failure. Liaise with engineers to produce quality maintenance programs and make decisions with other BHP personnel to keep large mining equipment in operation.
The hardest part of the job is making the correct dissensions to prevent breakdowns as high cost if the plant shuts down. The results with major breakdowns is sufficiently less and site management have reviewed and are more at ease.
