Fun Workplace

Checkout Operator (Former Employee) - New South Wales - 28 October 2023

Big W is a fun workplace, a lot of easy going people. Great discounts on all connected stores, eg, woolies, bws, ect. Could be more organised with rostering, but use workjam which is great to update when you’re available. You can do anything in workjam it’s a great tool. Personally I had great friendly managers.

Fun workplace

Ok to work at

Just an ok place to work. Being friends with the right people helps. Being a lower end employer some of the people you may have to work with will be more rough around the edges and this is an adjustment.

Great place to work with really good co workers. The job is enjoyable majority of the time. Sometimes you may deal with a few situation from customers that may put you off, besides that staff and management a really supportive.

No shifts

I loved working at Big W, but was only shifted on when they wanted me there, which was 1 day a week for 3/5 hours, waste of time honestly. I have 1 shift i do that im scheduled on for, then the rest of the week ive got to sit around my phone, hoping and praying i get an hour or 2. I feel more of a volunteer there, then a actual employee

Good casual job, work over 40 hour weeks during events like easter, christmas and eofy. They cut hours, however and management definitely have favourites. Good for just out of school or sick of the 9-5 office job, if you want flexibility, Big W is great. You make great friends and get a good experience with customers. Good and bad. Great extra money. Understanding when you need leave or have to change availabilities.

Cons

Management have favourites, some managers can’t handle stress and get cranky with everyone.

Bigw is a good place to work

great excellent team members and training

The people I worked with were kind helpful and excellent team members to work with , however the Roster is not a balanced and fair rostering system , I was not told over the phone but only found out when showing up to work that my roster had changed and when I asked my superior about it she said bad luck, it's up to you to come into the store and check your roster change regularly. That wont do I said to myself ' that wont do at all !

I was on check out when they needed me other wise I was doing stock putting things back on the self restating to put them in the right place. Then I would go have a break go and eat my lunch in the staff room.

Fun workplace and a supportive team

This was my first official experience in the workplace as a an adult and after months of endless searching I was finally able to score a job and I'm glad my first experience was with Big W. I learned a lot there in terms of how to interact with customers, operating cash registers, maintaining and running a section of the store by myself for extended periods of time, recovery throughout the store, all valuable skills that will be incredibly useful for me in any future job I take up.

Great environment, not enough hours

I worked for Big W for 3 months. It would have been longer, had I been offered more hours. After christmas, I went from 25-30hrs per week, to 4hrs per week. A big drop and I couldn't live on that. I have a family. The management were friendly enough and tried to help out with shifts as best they could, but it was always upper management and head office that "had their hands tied" when it came to giving out more hours. The staff were a lot of fun to work with, but unless they were on a permenant part time contract, they were always whinging.
