Not too bad of a place

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Provision of a variety of roles that can be undertaken by all employees, offering anyone who joins the chance to become an integral part of the business but also enjoy the working environment. Regular wins are also provided in the form of pizza, foods and drinks. Downside would be the hours offered.

Pretty Good

Can’t complain, quite flexible and decent pay. Good rates and good team usually. Some supervisors can be annoying but overall good company to work at !

I love the people I work with

The thing I love most is the people I work with, it's great to work with a team of great people, makes for a great workplace. The pay needs to be better though, can't afford anything with the cost of living going up and our wages staying the same!!!!!

If you believe in true customer service, this is not the place for you.

Middle management too long in the job and despite what they think, have no idea of what customer service really means. They tolerate younger staff being without focus, but have no problem expecting seniors to make up the difference by day's end. Becomes frustrating when trying to assist customers, knowing management are all about the $ and easier flipping people off with a half-cocked story to be rid of them.

Pros

Nothing - but you do meet some interesting people.

Cons

Plenty.

Horrible management behaviour

Shocking management. Swearing and yelling at staff. Always negative. Managers without any patience or people skills. Having to deal with demoralising high levels of shoplifting of which you can do nothing about. This brings with it a sense of waste and a culture of not caring.

Pros

Award pay

Cons

Management

Good to start with but not a forever job

Management were horrible communicators and threw us casuals around. There were definitely favourites and if you weren't one of them, then your voice or opinion didn't matter. I tried learning different areas but they'd always put us young people on door, then blame us if people stole as if we could do anything.

Pros

Decent pay and breaks

Cons

Inconsistent work, no communication

Meh.

Managers like to give preferential treatment to their favourites and give crumbs to everyone else. Managers also have superiority complexes and will look at you as if you're stupid. Hopefully you meet a handful of decent people in your department but that's not a guarantee.

Very political hierarchy within most stores.

The wage is absolutely pitiful for the amount of work that you are supposed to complete within an allotted time. Short shifts are spread over a week making work/life balance impossible

Pros

Staff discount

Cons

Low wages and not enough hours

it was okay

chaotic and nothing is ever where it's meant to be. management is pretty toxic and if you have an issue or are struggling, they don't care and will lessen your shifts.

Work hard with no recognition

Maybe great for a first job but not if you are looking for a regular income. No contracts are given to staff only need to give you 1 three hr shift per fortnight. Managers are not supportive and dont listen to staff they sre not the best at all. Team members are great, supportive and friendly.

Enjoyable job with many different departments to work in, however management can be difficult

Overall, a nice environment to work in, however management can be rude & selfish, expecting you do do extra shifts / being annoyed if you say no, even as casuals.

Pros

Staff discount, colleague friendships, easy going

Cons

Angry customers, management, little appreciation

Toxic

A lot of bullying in-store and no actions taken for it. A lot of the more older team members that have also been there the longest seem to enjoy talking down to the younger team members and telling them what they can and can’t do just based off what they don’t like and not the store rules. I’ve been bullied for my appearance and my work. It’s a very gossip environment but not in a good way. When you first start, they throw you right into the deep end and expect you to know how to do absolutely everything even though you clearly weren’t shown or told how to do it and then they get annoyed at you for not knowing.

Great friendships and decent work

I had a great time working at big w, the managers can be horrible and customers too but good supervisors make all the difference. Overall it’s a decent place to work.

Bad

If you provide good customer service you won't be looked after at big W , customers are great unfortunately management push you and don't care when you bring something up.

Culture steeped in policy & procedures, original thought not encouraged

Unfortunately a once family orientated company has descended into a toxic environment where everyone is miserable. They now promote very young 20 somethings to store management very quickly who have very little understanding of people, very little empathy, very little experience. If you’re a more mature age, been with the company for many years you’re treated as though you should be pensioned off. Wealth of experience in customer service means nothing. It’s a job for those who need one to get some experience, but don’t get stuck in the rut & move on to a more encouraging, inclusive workplace.

Pros

Some of the employees become good friends

Cons

Low morale, no job satisfaction

It’s okay if you don’t have aspirations for a fulfilling job

If your role is a customer service champion or you work weekends when it’s busy it can be fun and you get into a flow state, but when you go full time and do the daily grind of merchandising, printing tickets, serving customers at the checkouts, helping them look for items - it gets mind numbing. When toy sale and Christmas hits though, it’s among the most stressful experiences both from management who need to get as much work done as possible with limited staff and customer impatience.

Pros

Long lunch breaks

Cons

Sometimes you can be micro managed

Great experience, but maybe work-life balance might be a struggle

Really supportive co-workers and management. However, need to give availability very early as they roster few weeks prior. This might affect a person's work-life balance.

Stressful, under staffed

To many work changes for the worst.Head office make some very poor decisions. No uniform policy. Customers are confused if you work there. Under staffed.

Pros

Friendly staff to work with.

Cons

Under paid. Customers getting more demanding and entitled.

Boring and poor management

Poor management you don’t get hardly any training just a 10 minute run though there is never any support and your expected to be available 24/7 otherwise you don’t get shifts
