Smaller team, but still under a detached bureaucracy

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Store hampered by the conglomerate of the business model. Decisions made by data crunching rather than by experienced workers. This would be the case with all stores though.

Excellent work environment

Really nice Men and Women to work with, was a nice experience for a change. Even though custys were rude as, I kept my cool and proceeded to be nice. Even if I did imagine shooting them. Like, it is not that hard to show someone courtesy. When their trying to make an honest living.

Pros

Being indoors to have lunch, wow. That was different.

Cons

None

Lack of staff, no motivation

Big W use to be a fun and exciting place to work that enabled me to focus on customer service and make everyone have a great day. Those days are over since this stupid RT3 or “Right Team at the Right Time for the Right Task” is complete rubbish. We’re constantly understaffed, over worked and expectations and responsibilities keep growing and growing. Due to the reduction of staff in the store for some stupid decision, there is no time to finish jobs that previously were achievable.Decent job for high school or uni student but don’t expect a fun one as you’re always working hard and never get to finish your tasks and clean up.

Flexible hours

Retail has changed over the years. If you want a full time job you have to apply for a management position.Other positions are good for students or mums who only need part time work.

Depends on location of store

My first two Big W stores had team spirit, fun days & worked / cared as a team. The last one, is not supportive, undermining personnel and has unsafe practices that management ignores at the local store ,

Pros

You can move to another store

Cons

Rostering hours can be personality based

Productive, good team and nice manager

Flexible and great place to work. I enjoyed working with my team members and my manger was very helpful and fair. As a casual they were slightly pushy with me not being able to work how they wanted me to and when they wanted me not what was flexible for me.

Great place to work

Love working at Big W! When you're there for a while you learn pretty much everywhere which is great. Little opportunity for growth but every day is different

Great for experience

Good starting place for school leavers or those wanting to work in retail during a gap year. Job mobility is great as you can transfer easily to any store. Management and team culture can be good bad depending on the store.

Enjoyable

Sometimes fast paced and requires improvisation. Although otherwise an enjoyable experience, especially as a first job. Team is always lovely and supportive.

Toxic lazy coworkers and lazy managers

Management sweep everything under the carpet. Lazy management that never interact with staff. Everything is geared by budget and money with no emphasis on staff well being. Lack of appreciation. The workers work harder whilst the lazy people don’t even get addressed

Pros

Flexibility with family life and appointments

Cons

Low pay rates and high workloads

fun place to work

I love working at BW it was very interesting. Tell me the customers you would meet the Christmas rush. The toy sale is back to school sale all the different sales at big W used to have. Sometimes it will be very busy. Sometimes it would be quiet

Fun and productive

If you wanna work and get paid a good amount, work at big w. Of course it depends on your team but overall the experience and everything that comes with it is worth.

50/50 kind of place

Some days good, some days not. Managers have favourites with lazy workers & overwork their hardest working staff. Poor rostering so shop is understaffed & blame on no funds for more staff. Managers will speak to you like a child for being late to work due to traffic but will keep a well-known bully & liar work for 5 years. Managers will dump the tasks of several people, expect you to finish all tasks by the end of your shift with little to not team help, & then blame you for there being a mess or things being behind schedule.I’m probably overworked & in need of a massive holiday away from the place!

Good but not a career

It is a good job as a temporary thing as it is quite flexible however it's somewhere you definetely should move on from. Low paying as it is the minimum eba rate. Culture is a hit and miss. Made some lifelong friends however other employees and managers could make it really toxic. Filling stock is good as well as online department however dealing with so many entitled customers will make you look at people very differently.

Good staff, bad management

People leaving all the time because management expecting you to do 4. Or 5 people's work. Minimum staff. Minimum hours.Good for casual work for students

Pros

Flexible hours

Cons

Bad management

Safe and Compliant

With a big company you get the security of orderly and "enforced" guidelines, that are always there to protect you. Overall, if you get good co workers it is very friendly.

Lots of work but scheduled in areas you don't want to be

You get plenty of work and hours (all depending on what areas you've trained in), wasn't properly trained as a door greeter but was put on it anyway. Hired as a fill member but don't do fill anymore, all just checkout and door duties now. Job are pretty easy to learn, but sometimes they slack in proper training then get angry you don't know what you're doing.

Productive and supportive

Management helpful and supports you through thick and thin. Job gets a bit tiring and repetitive but each day brings a new challenge and you always have people around you to support you

Pros

Good break times, good management, Woolies Rewards

Cons

Lower end pay

Decent but management ruined it

Co-workers are nice and work isn't stressful, but some parts of management made the workplace toxic to the point that I hated coming to work

Toxic

If you're one of the "gang" or family, you're ok. You're expected to work across the whole store, even though there was only one job you actually applied for. That's unethical at best. You're thrown in the deep end and then bullied if you have to ask for help. And not just by "team members", but the line managers too. Pathetic! Training is a joke. These people couldn't run a chook raffle. So much for "family", and "team". There's no understanding, empathy etc like they spout, they're 100% deluded if that's what they think. I hated being there. Not a good place to work because of the people there. It occurred to me that you have to be a certain "type" to work in big w(the ones in their little cliques anyway!)Don't work there if you value yourself and mental health.

Pros

"Some" people are nice there.

Cons

Pretty much everything.
