Decent for part time job while studying

Indeed Featured review

it was alright, people were nice but kinda boring at times when it was quieter, can usually get shifts you want but there isn't really much room for progression

Great Casual Employment

I’m not sure if this is the experience for salaried workers, but I really love this job. The management staff are all kind and caring, and do a great job of keeping everything going smoothly. I can definitely approach wanting more or less hours. Have worked there for more than a year now and expect to stay a long time

Pros

Always rewarding staff with lunches, chocolates, activites

Cons

Hard to present ideas to management and have any changes

Overall okay workplace, but demanded too much at times so could be stressful. Management wasn't good

Management didn't treat employees that well overall - didn't feel valued, expected too much, weren't understanding of personal issues interfering with my ability to work. The actual work was fine though, not too hard.

Satisfactory for first job - nothing else. Management untrained in their professions

Firstly the positives: 1. Big W was quite good when it came to the whole initiation and training part of the job. The training was manageable and did over what was needed. 2. Some of the fellow staff members were friendly and welcoming (defiantly not all). 3. The pay was good, not amazing but enough. However, the cons about the job: 1. The biggest and one that made the biggest impact was the management. As everyone would know, management is an integral part to ones job. How someone is manage affects staff morale, the job itself and the motivation of getting up and going to work. When management fails at their job, its sends ripple effects throughout all levels of staff. This is what happened at Big W Capalaba. To be put simply, management was severely under qualified, untrained and overall not fit for their position. Some attributes associated with one particular manager (that is no longer there - and for good reason) is hypocritical, extremely unprofessional and intimating. You want your staff to feel comfortable around you so why are there individuals in management that are unapproachable, rude and intimidating. Touching on that, "practice what you preach" - do not tell staff to not do something then flat out do it yourself (hypocritical). Lastly, the store manager. Yelling at 14yr old employees? I don't care if you are the prime minister or a store cleaner, not on! Control your anger or get out of your job. 2. Some of the staff are extremely condensing and rude. They have their own little groups and very segregated from the rest of the staff. Some of the middle-aged -

Pros

Training

Cons

Management and rude colleagues

Fast paced retail environment.

I've been working here for 3 years and have had many different opportunities to work in different areas in the store. I also have recently been given the opportunity to work in the technology department.

A great place for part time employment, lots of diversity within employees.

I didn't mind working at Big W although the inside quarrels between management drastically effected my team. I do feel the bosses of my managers were the core of most problems (putting stress on management) and if they worked in better conditions the management would be much better. I sometimes did not want to talk to my managers about any personal problems relevant to the workplace as they made it clear they already had enough to care about. This drastically reduced the moral of me and my peers. I worked minimum hours and could not support myself with this job solely. If management was better and more hours could be available I would

Pros

Friendly coworkers

Cons

not enough shifts

No support from HR when needed

Manager rules everything and everyone, if that don't agree with you they make sure your time is impossible there and therefore you will leave Bullying

Nice place to work

I have been with Big w for over 10yrs it is a great place to work, managers are friendly and outgoing and always willing to help when they can, Sadly the store I am located at now doesn't have a lot of hours for us casuals hence the decision to leave.

They made me sad

They made me sad they don’t ring me for shifts and still waiting for my new manager to ring me how sad how they made me feel like am nothing because I have Depression and went to casual and work weekends but no one is rung me from work to check on me to see if I’m okay not very good support system and still waiting for them to ring me to give me a shift so my eight years of working at big W and not one person has rung and checked on Me to see if I can do a shift just shows that I’m not very good at

You have to really like customer service to work here

Assisting customers with their day to day shopping can be both very fulfilling, and also stressful for people who arent build for conflict handling. The teams working at Big-W can be pretty fluid, with a lot of management and staff turnover. The hardest part of this job is definitely trying to compromise with customers when their request are unreaosnable

Great for Casual Employment, Not For Long Term

I enjoyed working at Big W, however after falling pregnant I was not put on with the others despite working over time and taking additional shifts etc...

Big W is no different to any other big company. It has pros and cons with some of the management decisions leaving you scratching your head. All in all it is a good company to work for and the benefits were quite good.

Pros

Cons

Communication between management and staff can be poor.

Big w

I absolutely loved working in customer service and found I was very good at it. I adored the people I worked with. The atmosphere was great and I was able to move around the store and work where I was needed whether that was on checkouts, lay-by, self-serve or in the fitting rooms.

Pros

great environment, great staff

Great opportunities to develop skills.

Started when I was 14 and 9 months and only got casual shifts. Got a permanent part time contract when I was 20 which helped me develop many social skills and improve my work ethics.

Pros

Learning opportunities

Cons

Constant shift of management
