Met some great people
Handstock Merchandiser (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 7 May 2023
Not enough team members on the shop floor. Weekly gap check makes the job mentally stressful. Too many family members were employed at the store. Some managers a very disrespectful in the way they talk to their team members.
Pros
Free lunches and snacks/per month
Cons
Overtime is paid in BOH, they owe you hours, not money.

Jobs at Bunnings
in Sydney NSWDepends on store management
Manager (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 17 February 2023
Some stores are awesome and some are just full of the deadweight management that the area managers are too afraid to sack. Can result in a hugely toxic work environment and even with multiple complaints to HR nothing gets done but a slap on the wrist and a slight demotion.

People are good but it's pretty understaffed
Team Member (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 21 November 2022
At most Bunnings stores there's an expectation to be friendly to each other and so new team member are usually welcomed pretty easily and not intimidated by long term staff. The pay for casuals is very good, especially if you're student, and unless you're a bad worker you're pretty much guaranteed hours so don't go on a contract unless you absolutely need it. The in store managers are okay. A big focus is put on mental health and they're usually pretty understanding and supportive when it comes to that. The problem is with the higher ups in the big offices. Literally every Bunnings store is understaffed because each store is not given enough of a budget to put adequate staff on each shift, despite us working through two Covid outbreaks and making record profits for them. Workers are tired, run down, and just as upset that customers can't find anyone to help as much as customers are. Closing shifts were a rushed nightmare and mess would pile up around you as you had to attend to customers first and couldn't complete other duties. Managers usually have to cover the lack of floor staff and become frustrated and stressed when they can't complete their own tasks. The only upside is that everyone struggles together. Lunch rooms are either a therapy session or a place to nap. If you can handle heat, constant loud noises and constantly jumping between customers and your own tasks while understaffed, then you can handle Bunnings.
Pros
Good pay, friendly coworkers
Cons
Understaffed, stressful, extreme temperatures

Toxic management, decent pay
Floor Staff (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 27 April 2022
Overall, it can be decent if you have good managers. A lot of them seem to lack social awareness or training to deal with their employees, and this ends up creating quite a toxic workplace. If you’re a casual, don’t bother saying no to shifts - other shifts will be removed if you say no to anything. Other than that, if you enjoy doing long hours and having to suck up to managers for shifts, you’ll do well here.
Pros
Sometimes there’s pizza. Casuals get bonuses and sick leave.
Cons
Terrible management, not a place to work if you’re studying as they don’t really care about your schedule.

helped me build work experience in customer service and develop knowledge of products and trades
Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 5 April 2022
It was a learning experience for me, in terms of DIY knowledge and product knowledge for a wide array of jobs. The management wasn't good however, they would push employees out of their position if you weren't viewed as competent enough; rather than training the individual. There were cliques in the team however I did develop great friendships too.

Good salary, but culture will vary heavily store to store
Paint expert (Current Employee) - Sydney NSW - 7 February 2022
Even from the right side of the line, bunnings management is largely a boys club. There is a lot of talk of advancement, however very few people actually get this chance, no matter how qualified. On the bright side, they pay well, and are very willing to work within your availabilities. Stores that meet or exceed targets are often given gifts from head office for all employees, as well as a christmas present each year which can range from a google mini to a wellness diary. The employee discount is good, and now extends to officeworks, target and kmart. Once you've completed your training, they will be loathed to get rid of you and you are also able to request transfers between stores, which is handy if you end up moving.
Pros
Good pay, Flexibility in rostering, Shares in wesfarmers after 2 years of work, Very hard to lose your job once trained
Cons
Incestuous management, Few actual opportunitues to progress a career, Predominantly male leadership, Inability to fire long term employees, no matter how poorly they perform.

Fun co-workers but management is hit or miss, just depends on how lucky you get
Support Worker (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 23 January 2022
Just another number really, but good experience for a first job. Don't expect management to care about your mental wellbeing. Typical retail job, not amazing and not bad.
Pros
Good penalty rates
Cons
Exhausting work, no career progression really

Can be ok- if you put in the hard work and have a positive, friendly attitude
Bunnings team member (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 30 July 2020
I think the hardest part of the job is always learning how to fit into the environment. In a general sense, just be friendly and polite, and you will
hopefully get along with your co-workers, but there is always naturally some disagreements that happen.
I learned how to manage my stress levels, improve my communication skills and more important skills such as honesty, kindness and patience, because most of the employees are really good people.

The best student job one could have
Front desk, Team leader, shift-supervisor (Current Employee) - Sydney no - 25 November 2019
Being able to study and work has taught me a lot of time management skills. But also the flexibility I experienced at Bunnings with my timetabling for uni classes helped me to advance my studies.
It is always a wonderful place to come to thanks to the people I work with.

Productive and Enjoyable
Volunteering (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 19 August 2019
Learnt great communication skills. Cash and food handling as well. There was no "hardest" part of the job but I did struggle cooking the sausages and onions when the weather is 30+ degrees over there but we fixed that little issue with ice & icy drinks from the esky. Most enjoyable part for me was the process of it all. From chopping the onions the night before and vacuum sealing them and the sausages so its fresh and ready to cook the when needed to taking a customers order, to calculating the total in my head, to cooking and delivering a fresh sausage sandwich.
Pros
Free food and drinks provided.
Cons
Clean and pack up was a pain.

Bunnings was a very enjoyable job with a great workplace culture. All team members got along very well and made it a fun and exciting place to work. The large team felt more like a family and everyone got along with each other. The work was enjoyable simply for the team that you work with, making the jobs get done quickly and easily without it feeling like a chore.
Pros
Excellent workplace culture
Cons
Early starts and Late finishes (team was present from 5am - 12am)

Working for Bunnings is a great opportunity to hone one's sales and customer service skills.
Apart from serving customers, I enjoyed ordering plants and other stock items using a modern APP facility.

Heaven if you not looking for promotion or pay raise
Team Member (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 17 January 2018
The team culture is wonderful, totally easy going.
The leadership team can be really good mentors.
The store is large which is very good for people to understand big retail business.
The tasks have very low difficulty
But
The bottleneck of pay raise comes really early, 60k is almost the top if you are not part of the store leadership which is only 2% of the team.
There is chance you could get one of the store leadership members with really low awareness of how human mind works (ZERO ideas of people skill)
Pros
easy going enviroment
Cons
44k - 60k for 98% of team
