no communication, bad training, no loyalty
Customer Service (Current Employee) - Wollongong NSW - 27 November 2023
I have worked with the company for three years and have witnessed first-hand how poor head office is at communicating and effectively managing the brand. The turnover rate has been INSANE! In these three years I have had 12+ managers who have all left for the same underlying reasons (this is the case at multiple locations). There is no concise communication from regionals or head office so when there’s promotions or a change in branding you will hear multiple different expectations and ways to do it but be scolded no matter which way it is done. As well, when you speak to one regional about an issue do not expect anyone else on that level to be informed; on multiple occasions I have explained to one regional about why a task or an error has occurred and still been called out on morning zoom calls/ public Teams’ chats or even been called on my days off to have them degrade me - it is miserable. It is also the bitchiest workplace and not just from other co-workers. I have been In conversations with regional figures, store managers, assistant store managers, supervisors, and visual merchandisers who have said AWFUL things about each other behind their backs, forced people to quit for how they’ve been treated. purposely not given shifts to much more qualified individuals, lied about events happening to make themselves sound better, and when People and Culture have been contacted - nothing has happened. They are more concerned with firing people over $2.5 water bottles. The training is god-awful as well. Don’t expect support or sympathy for not knowing how to do something. You will -

Jobs at City Beach Australia
Productive and fun workplace
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Pacific Fair QLD - 5 November 2023
Management was good. Made a lot of friends. Pay was average and the store discounts were nice. Whenever I was unable to make a shift, management was very nice about it.

Hit or Miss
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Sydney NSW - 1 November 2023
Really high turnover rate. I had 4 managers in a year. The pay is stingy. Easy. Just something that could be better. The younger you are the more you will be put on.

Not great, but I can see they try to make up for it at least.
Warehouse Worker (Former Employee) - Murarrie QLD - 30 October 2023
Typical day is: - Getting there 10 minutes before starting, in case of traffic. - Sitting on your phone until your shift starts. - Making sure you scan your finger before the start time, else you will be docked the first 15 minutes. - There's a morning speech each day, going over any updates and a few feel-good things to promote morale. - Stretching. - Being assigned your task / area for the day. - Doing your job for the day. - Lunch breaks. - Dealing with idiotic things. Management was okay I supposed. They are reasonable people of course and will understand your needs, but they don't really run the place very well. Often times areas would be clogged with too much incoming stock and need to be diverted elsewhere, which becomes a big mess of a situation. Also not really having a full grasp on some unusual tasks they ask you to do. Like thinking an aisle can be scanned and cleared out in an hour by 2 people. 99% of the coworkers are happy to communicate and cooperate during work. Very few unfriendly people, but that's a person specific issue, not to do with the job. Not really much culture, not that I cared about that personally. You can meet people from other departments during lunch and mingle if you want. The company does do stuff like ice scones, Halloween dress-up, etc, from time to time. There's plenty of wending machines with drinks, snacks, and some meal type foods. Though the meals could be a bit better. Also water stations everywhere. Both a very appreciated part of the DC at least. The toilets are pretty gross since unfortunately many people work -
Pros
Wending machines. Water. Aircon lunch room. Working hours options. Respectful management.
Cons
Heat. Physical demand. Toilets. Poor management. Workers doing idiotic things.

Horrible workplace
Supervisor (Current Employee) - Chermside QLD - 17 October 2023
horrible time while working here. toxic management and get bullied out of stores. multiple managers quiting at once and left with incompetent people to run the show. and unable to hire people who are competent enough to work in retail. you can’t work overtime and they cut so many hours. forced unpaid hour lunch, and 2 10 minute breaks and never have the time to take both since there is never enough floor coverage. you get 35% discount full time but in stores are paid fortnightly where as head office and DC is weekly.
Pros
none
Cons
long hours, horrible benefits

Good
Warehouse Worker (Current Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 4 October 2023
It’s okay, only been there a short time. Does get a bit hot, but people are good to work with. Managers have no emotional intelligence and probably need more management training.

Don't subject yourself to their toxicity and unprofessional conduct
Warehouse Worker (Former Employee) - Murarrie QLD - 26 September 2023
The warehouse mostly employee's young inexperienced people. The supervisor's are also lacking experience and people skills. The job is long days in a hot shed and you're not allowed to talk to anyone. Staff turnover is horrendous.
Pros
None
Cons
Long hours

i wish i could give zero stars for management. absolutely horrible management.
Casual Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Erina Fair NSW - 20 September 2023
a typical day of work if you weren’t on registers consisted of attempting to organise the over stocked racks because no items were to be stored in back room, standing in fits not being allowed to leave even though there’s not customers, or tagging at the counter because tagging hours were cut. cannot explain how terrible the management is, if you get hired expect shifts to be randomly taken off you, randomly added without asking before if you can work, or best case not a single shift for 2 and a half months. it’s not just store managers either, regionals will cause you to cry due the amount of pressure put on children most of the time, or not being allowed to go into the back room more than once a shift otherwise you will get yelled at. Only enjoyable part is the other team members that make it slightly less horrible. praying for those working there currently or in the future

Look elsewhere
Assistant Manager (Current Employee) - Sydney NSW - 13 September 2023
Higher management micro manage and have unrealistic expectations. They expect you to do the job a certain way but yet have to micro manage so you can’t do your job properly. The amount of pressure put on to management is ridiculous

Fun, good roster
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Warringah Mall NSW - 6 September 2023
I enjoyed my time working here. Fun place with room to be promoted if you choose to use it as a career. Fulltime roster was good half day Thursday and Mon and Sunday off.

Great Company
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Cairns QLD - 6 September 2023
I honestly loved working at City Beach it’s such a great work environment to be in and everyone really gets along. The management team their are awesome and I couldn’t ask for better leaders. I only left due to the fact I moved cities otherwise I definitely would’ve looked at progressing my career there.
Pros
Discounts on clothing
Cons
Hard to move up

Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Morayfield QLD - 5 September 2023
I applied and got the Christmas Casual position. I know that you only work for a certain amount of time but it really does not help when you get 2 shifts in the course of 3 months. Management was outright rude and snarky, and i got thrown onto the floor with no training (this was my first job and they knew that). all in all just a horrible place to work out. plus i never got my discount card.

Overwhelming and disorganised
Visual Merchandiser (Former Employee) - Penrith NSW - 31 August 2023
The position it’s self is great. Very rewarding watching you’re hard work come together creating the visual look of the store but when it comes to the management side (especially regional management) they are just rude and arrogant people

Good discount
Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Coffs Harbour - 27 August 2023
Ok work place. Workers higher up are very rude and talk about others behind their backs. I found it horrible to work here due to the cold attitude I got from others as a new employee. Ok paid. Slightly toxic

Pay?
Warehouse Assistant (Former Employee) - Murarrie QLD - 2 August 2023
I worked here for a while I enjoyed it but wasn’t sure if I was getting underpaid or not, everybody was nice but the pay was not reasonable at all. —-

Decent place but not great work environment
Team Member (Christmas Causal) (Former Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 1 August 2023
In the beginning it was a great place to work. Most days my job was to take care of change rooms or tidy the store. After a while it became apparent the work culture was toxic and was built on favouritism. The managers told me they would train me up to build my skill set and kept taking that opportunity away. The job isn’t hard, it’s very easy, you only learn customer service skills unless they like you enough to teach you more.
Pros
Discount and location
Cons
Bad workplace culture

Not enough hours and unrealistic expectations
Retail Assistant (Casual) (Current Employee) - Perth WA - 26 July 2023
Going from a christmas casual to a permanent casual position i had assumed that it would have been easier to get along with my coworkers but people who have been there for a while are very dismissive of you and management will do nothing to help with workplace issues/bullying. There also aren't enough hours to go around but they keep hiring new staff. Went from doing ~12 hours a week to one three hour shift in a fortnight (if they remember to give you that much). Overall, the people are like a highschool clique and the shifts are sparse and given to managements favourites.

Hard, stressful, fun, exciting, but totally worth it.
Christmas Casual Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Surfers Paradise QLD - 15 July 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Worked with people my age or a bit older so nearly everyone got along, was good place to eat experience What is the most stressful part about working at the company? When we went through a rush where we had a lot more customers than usual and we had to clean, help customers, make sure nothing was being stolen and restock clothing and shoes all at the same time but it was fun What is the work environment and culture like at the company? A good environment can be stressful but when isn’t a job stressful? It’s all about the experience and learning new things What is a typical day like for you at the company? Making sure the my area was always kept tidy, helping customers to the best of my ability and learning a new thing about the job

Underpaid and undervalued
Stock Controller Manager (Former Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 29 June 2023
It's a sinking ship, company won't last much longer. Clothing becoming obsolete. Culture is changing in regards to surf fashion. Stores won't be open much longer
Pros
Good mates
Cons
High expectations little reward

Kind and fun co-workers, not so great management
Retail Assistant (Casual) (Former Employee) - Townsville QLD - 19 June 2023
Great for gaining experience and decent for a first job. However, the treatment towards ALL employees could improve drastically - management team should be better trained AND treated better to create a better workplace.
