Simple job with Good pay ~ Poor management and customers
Customer Service Team Member (Current Employee) - QLD - 28 November 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedStraight forward and simple job with decent pay, although customers are terrible and department managers are snarky and have lots of attitude towards younger team members, over hired in the service departments and forced to cut all casuals hours + won’t give some casuals shifts with the excuse “i must’ve forgotten you”. Despite this coworkers were great and supervisors were often very good and proficient in their job. Always felt like you can fall on your coworkers for help and I have definitely made friends here. Also there is good work/life balance with a lot of flexibility with getting time off as a casual ~ very clean and easy to use company website
Pros
Team Room with free food and microwave/toaster/fridge etc, team locker room, good pay for the job, free uniforms when starting, public holiday rates, ability to get training in other departments with ease, good store mangers
Cons
Poor Department Management, Long standing periods, Terrible customers

They have all these programs for mental health but when you actually need it managers are no help instead they watch you have a panic attack then expect you to still work

Jobs at Coles
Decent workplace
Trolley Collector (Current Employee) - Toowoomba QLD - 28 November 2023
The work is alright. You learn new things and connect with like minded colleagues. Customers and colleagues don’t make the work bad, it’s management. You either get a laid back manager that does really well, or a team leader who’s understanding. Then you get managers blaming you for someone else’s mistakes or a team leader barking orders every minute.
Pros
Discounts on a lot of products and services. Good annual leave hours. Pay is okay
Cons
Managers and team leaders not listening to feedback or opinions from team members.

Coles Team Member (Current Employee) - Forest Lake QLD - 24 November 2023
In my experience, the management at Coles lacks effective communication, leading to a stressful work environment. Improved management practices and clearer communication channels would greatly enhance the overall work atmosphere.

just a number
Team Member (Current Employee) - Australia - 23 November 2023
to the company you’re just a number, they don’t really care about you. the individual store experience might be ok but from a company standpoint they are very out of touch. employees get a 5 percent discount in store which most of the time is only enough to take a few cents off, and at the end of the year this year we got a reusable water bottle and 5 mythanks points (worth 5 dollars) because apparently that’s all we are worth for the abuse we cop from customers. we are made to meet certain targets (such as pick rates and bulk item rates) and if we don’t meet these requirements regional managers can contact you and essentially ask you to explain yourself. the morale of the company is extremely low and nobody really genuinely enjoys working for the company itself. plus the pay is awful and the company wants employees to be part time, which is a pain for people that want social lives and especially if you want to be able to afford the groceries that you sell to people
Pros
coworkers
Cons
literally everything else

Overworked and underpaid
Department Manager (Former Employee) - Victoria - 20 November 2023
I was a manager yet was paid $10+ less per hour than all the other managers. They do not care about being equal they only care about how much you cost. Will stop giving you shifts if you take a sick day. Will ask you to cover your shift if you’re sick.

Absolutely terrible management
Fresh Produce Team Member (Current Employee) - Tuggerah NSW - 15 November 2023
I’m not particularly sure about what other people at my store thought but for me the experience was absolutely terrible, Very poor management( Zero notice on shift updates, Zero notice on a new shift), Terrible people,I had more bad shifts then good shifts at cole’s purely because of doing two 8 hour shifts with only myself 90 percent of the time, My manager had no understanding that a teenager has extracurricular activities they need to attend to and on top of that i have school, Would not recommended working at cole’s tuggerah
Pros
Decent pay for a student
Cons
Management, Long hours, Awful co workers

A workplace which had a very different atmosphere during the day verses at night.
Night Fill Team Member (Former Employee) - East Victoria Park WA - 3 November 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Management was very happy to move me to a permanent part-time contract very quickly. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Deadlines were pressured and management was under stress from higher-ups to cut costs where possible. This lead to a stressful work environment. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Limited sense of team amongst night-fill workers due to pressures to meet deadlines and often working aisles alone. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Clock in, attempt to find whoever is in charge for the shift to find out which aisle you are working that night and get an understanding of the load for that night. Then work filling the aisle for the rest of the shift, most nights alone with occasional check-ins from the person in charge that night.

Fun place to work
Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) - St Albans VIC - 1 November 2023
Good place to work, average salary, The management at Coles Express was generally supportive and provided clear guidelines for daily tasks. The most challenging aspect of the job was dealing with occasional difficult or irate customers, which required patience and effective conflict resolution skills.

Completely incompetent management. Overworked, underpaid staff who aren't valued in the slightest. Unrealistic expectations from anyone in charge. Just a total mess.

Managers are also not the nicest, thinking more about themselves than team, they just do what works for them.

- managers were extremely harsh - constant back pain -constant nagging from managers - staff discount is only 5% that is nothing - very bad pay - multicultural workplace but still not that diverese - if your young you may not enjoy team as their mainly older and have more experience so their better at the job -extremely rude customers and manager did nothing - also need to work a minimum of 10 hrs per week, other places its like 3 hours

Decent people
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Melbourne VIC - 26 September 2023
I had a good experience at coles, my managers were good people and I got the opportunity to meet people my age and make friends. However packing groceries into bags for a 5 hour shift was harder then you'd imagine and I often left with a sore back.
Pros
Snacks
Cons
Scanning all day can be painful on your back
