Downer Group insights
Areas for improvement
- Overall satisfaction
- Fair pay for job
- Ability to learn new things
Good company to work for
QC co-ordinator (Former Employee) - Queensland - 16 December 2017
Good company to work for, with a very professional management team. Very diversified with job opportunities. Downer has the ability to draw on staff and resources internally from other projects to assist with delivery of projects ontime.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, job security is not forthcoming in my chosen field, however, Downer does make an effort to find alternative opportunities.

A safe professional company to work for
Road maintenance / Civil construction (Current Employee) - Kununurra WA - 23 January 2017
A typical day at work is hard to explain because my work can and does change from day to day, and I have the ability to adapt to change, I have been learning all parts of road construction and maintenance, and found the culture is very professional and a very safe one as well, I find working up here in the Kimberley very hot, but the most enjoyable part of the job is the thanks you get for a job well done.

Long Hours at times.

Working on a rural site
Safety Administrator (Current Employee) - Ingham QLD - 12 January 2017
. Very good team
. Work at a good pace
. Communication is very important
. You must be able to play the politics of management
. Your character will be challenged
. Job Security is nil as it depends on available work
Pros
Easy going team members
Cons
the politics

Poor culture, all about the money
White collar (Current Employee) - Australia - 8 November 2016
Zero emphasis on people. All about making money. More and more executives seem to appear while the lower down teams suffer.
Tier 1? more like 3rd world.
Forget about having a life as you will be working "considerably more" than 38hrs per week.
Pros
Better than being on the dole
Cons
Not having a life or sense of worth.

Mushroom management, lots of tiers of power hungry maniacs
Anonymous (Former Employee) - Anonymous - 27 October 2016
Good workers, staff however, unsupported by layer upon layer of senior management who are definitely not "for the people".
Not far from slavery, long hours and management don't like to listen so best to just shut up and get back in your box, do your job and take the pineapple.
Lots of emphasis on making money, little investment in people or tooling.
Don't bother asking for new machinery or equipment even though it is causing you to be delayed and stressed fixing broken tools constantly. Get used to being blamed for delays due to the company providing inadequate equipment which doesn't enable you to do your job and wastes hours each week.
Summary: Good workers and lower/middle staff who are bled dry by an uncaring senior management more interested in chest beating, employing even more useless senior management and producing fancy intranet pictures.
Pros
You do get paid.
Cons
Work hours, support, equipment to do the job

Downer had a great work culture, fixed any problems that arose on job sites and cares about the safety of its employees.
NBN Hauling technician (Former Employee) - Melbourne VIC - 9 September 2016
A typical day work for Downer was installing NBN cables through the pits and fitting them off on PCDs. I Learned nearly all there is to know about hauling with a few minor exception; there is always room for more learning. Management at downer were organized as they gave our future job site plans in advance which made our job easier. My co- workers we brilliant I loved the people I worked with. The hardest part of the job was working after it had been raining. The thing I liked most about the job was is didn't interfere with my personal life too much. The work life balance was excellent.
Pros
Never work in the same place for too long.
Cons
Unpredictable hours.

Butt covering management
Finance team (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 26 July 2016
Bad culture. Management has an attitude of working people into the ground until they leave. Lack of vision. Not a collaborative workplace at all. Avoid if you dont like working for authoritarians.
Pros
Used to pay well
Cons
Long hours, indecisive management, weak management, high turnover of staff

Cons

The company fell away once the old manager left the business
Senior Health and Safety Advisor (Former Employee) - Mount Isa QLD - 30 May 2016
Getting all supervisors to agree on scheduled times for training and safety related meeting and issues. That made it very hard to get the message across to all the employees in a timely manner
Pros
Most of the guys were good to work for
Cons
New manager was hard to deal with.

Fly in fly out electrical contractors
Electrical Maintenance Engineer/Leading Hand. (Former Employee) - Karratha, Western Australia. - 24 May 2016
Downers are Australia's largest electrical contractor. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Work is generally 10/12 hour days, 25 days on 10 days off. Great opportunity maintaining Australia's largest LNG plant. 30 plus years old plant so every day posed a challenge. Made many great friends. The long days and roster's were an obvious challenge, fatigue management was key. Made great friends and learned every day.
Pros
Constantly trained and educated.
Cons
Long work cycle.

downers christmas creekk wa
dump truck operator (Current Employee) - Christmas Creek WA - 27 April 2016
A week of day shift followed by a week of nights working amongst safety and procedure conscious people. A good blend of indigenous people working harmoniously amongst us. We work well as a team .Always keen to work and jumped at the chance to jump in a truck..Hot seating. Not much fun sitting in a crib waiting around so easier to get up and get on with the job.
Pros
safety concious
