Aura's Story
Coming from a nursing family, Aura felt that nursing was a very noble profession, so it was a natural progression for her to enter nursing. She thought of nursing as solely a profession where you help others heal and her first impression was that nurses are there to help others get better.
However, Aura feels that in aged care, it’s so much more than that, part of it is to make sure that lives of other people like the elderly can be enriched, and their lives improved by providing them better service and quality care. She said, “There is a connotation in aged care, that you didn’t choose to be there, but now I know why I’m here, it may have started that way, but now I know why I stayed, and I love making sure that this vulnerable group of people in our community are well looked after”.
After gaining her BA in Nursing in the Philippines, Aura then emigrated to Adelaide, undertaking a conversion course at Flinders University. She was then thrilled to enroll in our Graduate Nursing Program at Estia Health in Wattle Glen, but this meant moving from Adelaide. This was a difficult move for Aura, as she had no family here in Australia and had only just made friends in Adelaide. Determined to succeed, she started over in Melbourne and began learning all about aged care and quickly realised that to be a great nurse in the field, you also need to be a great leader.
After working as an Registered Nurse (RN) at Wattle Glen until the end of 2021, Aura was offered the Acting Clinical Director role. Now Aura is enrolled in our Emerging Leaders Program. “I want to be a great Clinical Director, and for the residents and staff to have a very positive experience. I have a lot to learn, and I look forward to being the best Clinical Director that I can be for the benefit of myself, and our residents. After that, I would like to grow into a Quality or Executive Director (ED) role, when I am ready. Estia Health has been very generous in making sure I am well looked after and helped me grow into the leader I am now through the nursing grad program and the Emerging Leaders Program. There’s always support from the Quality Business Partners with any clinical questions and management questions, and I can always go to my ED.”
Moving to another country, making friends, and starting a new job is not easy, but Aura has certainly blossomed here at Estia Health. She summed it up so well. “I feel like I have grown where I was planted. I want to stay with Estia Health, I feel like part of the family”.
Ranjit's story
Ranjit is an extraordinary woman. Originally from Northern India, she has a master’s degree in languages, but she had never worked. Not until she arrived in Australia. And in Australia, she wanted to become far more independent and show her husband and two boys how independent and capable she really was. And so, her story begins.
At the beginning, she worked for Estia Health as a Personal Care Assistant at Parkside, progressing to a Food Service Assistant quite quickly. It was evident to all her knew her that Ranjit had a deep love of cooking. And through the South Australian upskill program, Ranjit was encouraged to take up the opportunity to obtain a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. Ranjit was nervous, but with the support and belief in her by her Executive Director, she decided she would apply for the program.
Ranjit shares that doing the apprenticeship and learning while she works has been a great help. She says, “I feel blessed to work in this great company, it’s really nice”. Ranjit also mentioned that her own home is over an hour away from work, and even though there is an aged care home near her house, she wouldn’t think of working anywhere else. “, I feel listened to, and the staff are so nice.”
This is a common story amongst our employees. Many just love the homes they work within and wouldn’t consider working anywhere else. “I love the food here and I have learnt so much, all I knew how to cook before was curries, but with the help and encouragement of the Head Chef, I have learnt and enormous variety of dishes” In fact, she loves it so much, she now cooks the same dishes for her husband and boys at home and they love it.
Ranjit has also enjoyed learning how to bake, “we have cakes and snacks at the end of the month, high teas every week and we do a big birthday party with individual cakes for each resident’s birthday. Plus, a canape party every week! I would never have learnt how to make so many different dishes and desserts anywhere else”.
Ranjit enjoys how close she becomes to all the residents and that is one of her other main reasons for never wanting to leave Parkside. Ranjit has taken a short break from completing her Certificate due to personal reasons however looks forward to returning to this in the near future.
