Catch-22 - Metrics Obsessed

Initially hesitant, I felt obliged to write this review to shed some light on my experience within the client services organization in Fort Myers FL for those considering client management or other client services roles. The organization is metrics obsessed and without apology. If you don't completely agree with this notion or challenge it with merit you will be looked at negatively. You must not only accept but also embrace a mindset of constantly wanting to chase after metrics each and every day. The company will tell you to put the mission before the metrics but actions don't back that up. It isn't enough to help the client succeed in their goals without simultaneously hitting your metrics. Don't take this lightly if you are considering a role within the client services organization. The company promotes individuals who are great at hitting their metrics so management is full of people who put this above all else. It's fundamental to the culture. You are left with daily dashboards, reports of client activity and weekly meetings why so and so isn't opening research or pushing your call. Be prepared for this if you decide to move forward with a client services role. Despite all of this if you log an activity your manager or their manager deems to be incorrect they will let you go without warning. In other words, make sure every single activity your clients do is accounted for but do it correct 100% of the time or they will terminate you without warning. Good luck.

Great place to start

Great career choice if you are new to the working field. Not much opportunity for growth in the client services organization. For the most part, its a great culture. Its always relative to what your leadership or "management" looks like. Good culture, could use more diversity, most people genuinely care, open to change.

Inclusive environment that encourages innovation and collaboration.

Gartner is an incredibly forward thinking organization that understand the importance of taking care of its employees. You take good care of your people, and your people will take good care of your clients.

Nice place

Busy work day Great training Managers can be good; however, there is also poor management at within the organization. The culture can be positive; however, it can also breed a cutthroat environment.

Pros

Decent amount of maternity leave and PTO

If you want to work in a glorified call center with micromanaging leadership in a cult-like culture, apply there.

No matter what you try to do to achieve your set results, 95% of the time outcomes are completely outside of your control. You have sales metrics, even though you work with delivery. They set you up for failure from the start and if you work at the client services organization you are up for a really frustrating ride. They will make you feel like you won the lottery during training but as soon as the honeymoon phase is over (less than 6mo if you are a smart person) you will understand what you really signed up for. They take pride on promoting from within and don’t really apply anything they advise their clients to do. Chances are that your managers and VPs have less than half of your educational experience and have no idea of what goes on outside of their bubble and their limited experience working at Gartner for their whole life. They manage numbers, not people and do not take any criticism or suggestions lightly. They have a top-bottom approach to change and no advancements opportunities outside of management within the call center. If you want to move horizontally, you will have a hard time. If you work with real IT or in sales, your experience may be different but at client services it will be like this. There is an insane amount of administrative work and useless processes that could be easily eliminated or automated. Employees are all unhappy, turnover is so big that HR is struggling to keep up. By the way, HR is horrible, non-existent - basically a joke. Current employee morale is at the lowest point all across the board. Leadership knows it and is still averse to fixing -

Pros

Salary, benefits, corporate experience.

Cons

Everything else

the hardest part of the job is keeping your head above water. Lots of copy and paste, very administrative. Morale in the workplace is pretty much at a low point.

Highly metric driven

Focus is primarily on selling and retaining customers with little regard to the product or people they sell it to. As long as you can check off the metric every month you will be good and advance quickly.

Thriving business, great opportunities

Gartner is a wonderful company to join if you want to build your career and have the resources at your disposal to be able to do so in a structured manner. A typical day was very fast paced, very structured in terms of process, however very flexible when it comes to being able to manage your own day and clients in suitable manner. The management teams were dedicated to help you with self improvement and were always helping to set personal targets and steps to achieve them. There is a huge amount of collaboration between teams so it's a great place to get to know a wide range of people and build your network. The hardest part of the job but equally the most rewarding was working to very high metrics to achieve and reach on a quarterly basis. This is however regularly reviewed and the team help each other out if anyone was struggling in a particular area. I feel very proud having worked for Gartner and believe it has opened many opportunities for me since.

Pros

Ability to manage your own day

Cons

High pressured work environment

Excellent Pay-Minimum Job Security

Excellent pay with very limited job security. Its a trade-off "Pay vs. Everything else". Management hires/fires on a whim. Workplace culture is strictly based on department worked in and can vary from brutal to friendly. This is not a place for the faint of heart.

Pros

Salary

Cons

Life style

Takes care of their employees

Gartner is a great place to work and it they know that if you take care of your employees they will work harder. The only issue is there can be too much focus on sales and too little focus on client satisfaction. This is not always the case but it is difficult to keep the proper balance.

Great Place to Work if in Right Position

I worked in Gartner's Executive Programs (EXP) supporting our Tier1 members, C-Level executives. Helped them make day to day business and technology decisions to match the companies KPIs. I learned that C-Level executives have to be both business and digital savvy, not "technology" but digital savvy to be a good leader. Management in EXP is exceptional. The best part is they trust the employee to do the right thing. No one looking over your shoulder. However most people in EXP are already polished professionals and some are even former Gartner members which makes it easy. Hardest part of the job for EXP is to engage the un-engaged members. Meaning sales has sold them a membership and it is up to EXP to manage that relationship. Sometimes the membership level does not match the persons ability in the company. Most enjoyable part of the job is when you get the affirmation from the executive like "you just made my day, this is the information I needed most, this will help us a lot."

Pros

Get to interact with world business leaders, travel, lots of training ans education from top 3rd party companies such as Box of Crayons, etc.

Cons

Hard work, sales based, renewals are a big part of your performance
