Assistant Manager (Current Employee) - Queensland - 14 August 2022
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedLike any job like this it varies state to state store to store manager to manager. Started off really great then parts of state team changed and it was less great. Obvious favouritism being shown to other managers when we're also stuck or stressed. Manager started off really good bit progressively gave less of a dam as the year went on. Half the state team is incredible and i love them. The other half are a bit over bearing and too much.
Pros
Nice staff discount
Cons
Obvious favourites

It's an alright job, but not ideal if retail is your career.
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Melbourne VIC - 8 April 2022
This job is probably best if you are a uni student or work another job. Also great for a Christmas casual role as you'll get good hours and the store is busiest that time of year. Keep in mind, this is not a job you'll stay at for a long time. It's easy to get burned out. The managers especially work very hard to keep the store together, they don't get paid enough for the hard work they do.
Pros
Great staff at my store, 50% discount
Cons
Pay isn't great, Inconsistent hours as a casual, KPIs and targets can get ridiculous, Full day shifts can drag a lot, Staff discount applied ONLY to your home store and no other Jay Jays or Just Group store

Friendships make it worth it
Customer/Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Ipswich QLD - 28 March 2022
Jays is a fast paced, pretty competitive job. Huge focus on individual targets and smashing budgets. Normally made to work your butt off as minimal staff are hired with lots of work to be done, can be hard on your body with lots of repetitive work and management is usually down your back constantly but...it is a fun work environment with awesome staff discount and good opportunities to further your career.
Pros
Staff discounts, always busy
Cons
Hard on body, huge individual target pressure

Lovely people to work with, is a fun job but understaffed
Key Holder (Former Employee) - Chartwell, Waikato - 8 February 2022
Good shifts and decent pay, but very understaffed which made work/life/uni balance very difficult and a lot of stress in the manager. The staff i worked with are lovely.
Pros
Great coworkers
Cons
Understaffed

Not a great company
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Hamilton, Waikato - 16 January 2022
Didn’t pay properly during lockdown, boss was pushy and had favorites. Management was rude. They couldn’t communicate well. Not many hours. Brought up your smallest mistakes even though they made plenty bigger ones.
Pros
Discount
Cons
Bad management

Very competitive and kpi based work environment
2IC Manager (Former Employee) - Perth WA - 15 October 2021
I found the kpi based and competitive environment not as friendly or inviting, but there was alotnof training evolved-tonnes to learn and more than enough room and opportunities to move up.

Managers are overworked
Store Manager (Former Employee) - Western Australia - 9 June 2021
regional managers make your job worse then it should be, They only care when your sales are behind or anything that effects them. the state manager speaks to everyone horribly, the upper managers don’t offer any real support. you are expected to constantly keep up with the promo changes, INSANE stock levels, constant tasks with minimal hours and if you fall behind on KPIs because of it you are scolded. If you call your regional/cluster they always make you feel like your problems are small and they always make you feel like they are too busy for you. When they do visits you are micromanaged and watched so hard you can barely breathe. It’s honestly horrible. If you want to be a manager here, expect your entire home life to be ruined because it’s so busy/stressful your life becomes Jay Jays. You will go home and just be stressing about your next promo change or running your store.
Pros
50% off, great team directly in store
Cons
no balance of work/home life, horrible upper management, constant stress, continuous promo changes, ridiculous stock levels with little support

Horrible place to work
Store Manager (Former Employee) - Melbourne VIC - 20 April 2021
They don’t care about their team members. Regional managers are horrible and think they are better than their staff. The work load and life balance isn’t great!
Pros

fast paced and high expectation with no lunch cover
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Auckland City, Auckland - 27 November 2020
Typical day at jays is folding clothes, cleaning, putting through customer orders in the system, chatting and interacting with customers and occasionally have to work through a 7 hour shift with no cover. Jay Jays and other Just group brands are notorious for being understaffed that means that the "no cover" debacle is a regular occurrence leaving both employees and managers stranded. The regional management at jay jays was below average didn't follow the rules f dealing with there employees and weren't as fun loving cheerful and hard working as employees as myself were expected to be.
Pros
50% off products not including sale items
Cons
long hours, unreliable lunch cover, understaffed

Blood out of a stone
Manager (Former Employee) - Rockingham WA - 26 May 2020
Lots of stock to unpack and merchandise. Not enough staff to do it. Merchandising includes going on a ladder to move heavy piles of clothes. Pressure to achieve budget. They pay the minimum wage but expect maximum results. Don’t reward staff for exceptional work.
