Great management, not enough work.

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
The management was great, but weekly hours at my venue were limited to 3 or 6 hours per week. I feel like my pay was quite low, especially as it came with no benefits. Workloads can be inconsistent, sometimes you have to actively seek out work to do and be left with close to nothing for long periods of time, but at other times you can be overwhelmed with papers to mark.

Pros

Friendly management, easy work

Cons

No benefits, very limited hours

Alright

My kumon centre had low pay and the boss was bad. There was lots of recording and marking to do and it wasn't worth the yelling or the pay. Would only recommend if you know the boss/if the boss is good

Stressful workplace

Oftentimes stressful as it's a fast-paced environment and the workload is always increasing. Was provided with no training so had to learn from my own mistakes.

Expensive, but potentially worth it

If you as a parent can ensure that lessons go beyond just independent worksheet completion the benefits can be enormous. However, do not be surprised if minimal effort from parent AND student alike results in very minimal reward

Supportive tight knit environment

Straightforward training and the manager was great! Loved my coworkers and the culture is supportive and encourages flexibility and growth. Tasks were also delegated appropriately and suited our interests

Loved it

Had a love hate relationship here, some kids were tricker than others and the work was repetitive as you were scheduled by days . Co workers were nice and manager was understandable when cancelling shifts, however she did ask to cover shifts last minute a lot. Pay was great, but it was a monthly pay. Overall it is a good after school job, pays good and the kids are great.

Terrible

Very strict, keeps telling us to "be committed" and gets angry when we, as CHILDREN, have some event coming up that we have to go to, because children can support themselves just so they don't miss out on a day or two of work for three hours. Everyone started off with a different pay. I started with $10 an hour. Some others discussed to start out with $7 an hour. Another started with $12 an hour. Pay is inconsistent, sometimes I don't get paid enough for the hours I've worked. I have been told multiple times that I'm going to get a pay raise, and yet I still haven't. Sometimes she doesn't pays us on time, as once we hadn't been paid in just around a month. Only good thing about it is the co workers you make friends with.

nice work environment

Environment is calm, boss is nice and coworkers are nice as well. Good job as a first job, as you gain skills. Pay isn't that great especially if you are under 18.

Not enough training

I found this job to be quite monotonous and not enough training provided considering this was my very first job. Management was unnecessarily harsh at times, not a particularly supportive or fun environment.

Demanding, fast paced environment and tiring

- Productive environment and but lots of demands and expectation need to be met. - Low hours and low pay - depends on age - Experience at working different roles (multitask) - marking/recording, study skills, instructor and check in/out reception. - Good team work but lacks pace and efficiency at working at face past environment - Some employees lack team cooperation and time management skills, therefore other employees have to do their work and catch up. - Sometimes Manager and Senior Assistant threaten kids and complains about how employees never get work done on time, but in reality they leave everything to employees and walk out to attend their other business. - Do not get overpay if we stay back finishing piles of recording. - Acts really nice and professional to Senior managers and franchise owners but after that they turn crazy mode . - Also calls parent swear words on phone calls. - Always show favourites to some employees over others and standing up for them and let others do their work and get in trouble. ROLES - Marker/ Recorders - always so sloppy in their work and this leads to instructors and reception doing their work and letting markers go home early. - Instructor - accountable for kids action/ behaviour/ attitude - if kids don’t read English out loudly , instructor gets consequences - receptionist - always attend calls, stock and attend parents and respond to request. - manager - sits there with computer doing some other business and only shouts when she doesn’t see right thing happening. Overall, very boring, demanding and low pay. ————————- -

Good for students

Really flexible job, not too hard to manage. Sometimes the kids can be a bit unbearable, but the system and tasks are easy to adapt to and there's not much required other than a basic understanding of English and Maths.

productive and fun workplace

it's good for high school students, there is a flexible roster, minimum shift is for 3 hrs and a bit. However the pay is low, so keep in mind and don't expect too much while starting.

Bad company to work for

Archaic management and dealing with day to day operation. Very Japanese work culture in Australia, top to bottom approach. Also, Money is more important than anything to them!

Not bad

Low pay not stressfulHowever I disagree with the teaching method. Just worksheets and very strict. Very repetitive. Don't feel like I can do much to teach kids being tutor more like just telling them to do their work and mark

Low pay

Extremely low pay, strict environment and confusing system which causes more issues. Staff were okay but they did not speak usually, Stressful environment

Not challenging minimum wage pay

Class consisted of marking work or helping preschoolers with work. Very unrewarding and unstimulating job. Hours were also very bad but decent for students as it is afterschool hours.

Good but personally wasn’t for me

Wasn’t for me, it was great seeing progress of the kids but wasnt a fan of making them do work at such a fast pace. Overall don’t get many hours was they are only open for a short period of time so it’s hard to make money and the salary wasn’t very good

not the best first job

the pay was not good at all, fast pace environment with multiple duties to be responsible for. Would only even consider for your first job. Best part about work was to be able to teach younger students.

Productive and fun workplace

Good place to start if you have some to none work experience. Quite productive and rewarding from the Kumon I work at, mainly because of my boss. But overall good place to work

Stressful and Rude

They expect you to know the job as soon as you start. There wasn't much support from my manager who, when I needed help, waived me off and left me not knowing what to do. They start you in the classes with no previous training and teach you as you go. This may not be a problem for some people, however, this is a fast-paced environment with little to no time for them to teach you. This then leads to you being left alone without knowing what to do as you haven't been taught. This was one of the most stressful places I've worked and the pay is not good at all. Management was extremely rude during class and when under pressure but switches to kind and thoughtful after there is no stress or rush, which personally I can not work with as it is unprofessional in my opinion. I was told prior to my interview to not take things personally and that it was just criticism however after taking the job I was spoken to with an extremely rude tone and sarcasm I was being talked to as if I was a child.

Pros

work life balance

Cons

management and pay

Hard work and tiring

No breaks, no free food, but friendly co-workers. The role is just marking the student's answers on a given workbook and marking them according to an answer booklet
