Great place to work
Classroom Teacher (Former Employee) - Newcastle NSW - 1 July 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedI worked happily at the NSW Department of Education for 20 years before leaving as I moved interstate. It is a wonderful education system. Employee benefits are also great.

Very unhappy experience
EA Director Strategic Budgeting & Financial Analysis (Former Employee) - Parramatta NSW - 24 August 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Was very unlucky to work with another EA who really didn't want to let go of her previous role to concentrate on her present job. She blocked me at every opportunity, was narcissistic in her attitude & it took me leaving before management actually acknowledged the issues I had been experiencing. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Trying to do a job without having full access to the two Directors diaries as the previous EA was blocking my use. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Overall I think the DoE isn't a bad place to work, but unfortunately for me my experience with this EA wasn't pleasant at all What is a typical day like for you at the company? Busy managing two Directors email, diaries, meeting set ups

Great temporary role
HR customer service support officer (Former Employee) - Newcastle NSW - 13 June 2023
I was only in a temp role and was unsure if the role would be extended until the last week, unfortunately I had found another role due to the uncertainty. Otherwise if permanent or longer term contract was available it’s a great role and place to work. Employees are all very welcoming and supportive.
Pros
Long lunch breaks, permanent roles are hard to gain
Cons
Flexible hours and locations, opportunities to grow and develop, slower pace

Not the best place to work due to inconsistencies with reporting.
Classroom Teacher (Former Employee) - New South Wales - 7 June 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Hours of employment within the realm of classroom teaching What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Interfering Parents. Misconceptions. Outside organisations connected to this company who make decisions without correct information. Vilification of these organisations What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Not very good at all. Parents had too much to say about things they don’t know. Judgemental What is a typical day like for you at the company? Stressful. Threatening. Not supportive

Stressful workplace
Home Economics/ Hospitality Teacher (Current Employee) - Sydney NSW - 9 March 2023
Paperwork and focus on external training and development has taken teachers away from focusing on their core business which is teaching. Teachers are constantly taken out of their classrooms to attend courses to maintain proficiencies when the best experience to gain confidence and professional experience is in the classroom with their students. They need to be provided with assistance in the classroom rather than being cluttered with the theory of teaching.
Pros
Non face to face time
Cons
No longer a focus on teaching

Overworked and underpaid
Teacher (Former Employee) - Nsw - 7 March 2023
Overworked teachers. Too much expected to do in the hours given so you end up doing a lot outside work hours. Parents becoming issues and the new legislation does not protect or advocate for teachers

Two roles - both excellent experiences
Business Analyst / UX Writer (Former Employee) - Redfern NSW - 30 January 2023
I've worked at DoE twice and had a very good experience both times. DoE is a massive organisation, so it's challenging just navigating your way, finding information etc. The place can be political, which adds another dimension to what you're doing. But, the over riding positive for me was the passion that people have for education, and the constant focus on improving life for the staff on the front lines.
Pros
Culture, work life balance, passionate people, focus on education
Cons
Size of the organisation, political

Beurocratic organisation with poor top management
Part Time Teacher (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 25 January 2023
TAFE campuses are old, many rooms have no heating system or an air conditioner. Headteachers haven't worked in their industries for decades. Top management and HR are handling current challenges poorly. However, it looks like TAFE will get a monopoly on almost all the VET courses/programs/qualifications as other RTOs are not as much subsidised by the government as TAFE.
Pros
good hr payment rate, but assessment work is only paid partially, so it decreases the hr rate if you divide it by the actual working hours including assessment
Cons
Most of the teachers are part-time casual, have heavy assessment load, requirements to keep current, unlawful mandatory vaccination requirement within the organisation

Cons

A very busy office but a great team ethic
Manager (Former Employee) - Parramatta NSW - 6 November 2022
I started with the NSW Department of Education at an entry level and I have gained promotions over many years to achieve my goals, due to the ongoing professional development options.

Not enough work but good pay
Mathematics Tutor (Former Employee) - Granville NSW - 25 October 2022
Pay is quite high working as a tutor for the department of education. $60 - $80 per hour. But the shifts are really short. Like 2, 2 hour sessions per week max.
Pros
Good Pay
Cons
Not enough working hours

Bullying by executive staff is rampant
Support Learning Officer (Former Employee) - St Ives NSW - 10 October 2022
management need to take a serious look at their behaviour. Workplace culture is toxic. The most enjoyable part of this job is having the satisfaction the students are happy and learning.
Pros
supporting students
Cons
Bullying

Boss (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 25 September 2022
A great place to work at, highly recommended, good stuff, good crew, love that all… why would you want to work anywhere else when you can work with absolute gunners.

Relaxing and supportive environment
School Learning Support Officer (Current Employee) - Sydney NSW - 30 August 2022
The DoE has been the best employer I’ve ever had. Management at my school are incredibly understanding, supportive, and flexible, and they truly care about you. There’s a strong focus on upskilling employees through professional development and higher education, as well as on mental well-being since the job can sometimes be a bit stressful.

Stressful
Primary School Teacher (Current Employee) - Marrickville NSW - 12 August 2022
Working in the department of education can be rewarding. The problem is that the pay does not reflect the amount of work you are expected to do. The extra unpaid hours needed for the job is unsustainable. Behaviour management is the main focus of the job whereas it should be maths and English
Pros
Holidays
Cons
Long hours

Busy, demanding but very rewarding.
Teavjer (Current Employee) - Blue Mountains NSW - 17 July 2022
The Department of Education are forever changing and adapting to the needs of the time. I am sure there will be many changes in the future as it has to be that way.
Pros
Personally rewarding in a way that only a teacher will understand.
Cons
Busy, demanding, too much paperwork and box ticking.

Stressful
Teacher (Former Employee) - Tamworth NSW - 16 June 2022
Everyone knows that teaching is not at ALL what it used to be. The education system is slipping, and standardised testing, collection of data and a crowded curriculum means you rarely get to know or care for your students because you are so stressed all the time. Shameful.

Be very careful of the Principle and of your Head Teacher
High School Teacher (Former Employee) - Western Sydney - 18 May 2022
I loved teaching the students who had chosen the stage 6 science subjects and my students achieved great results....... but the NSW DoE is run by a gang of executives who stick together and if one of the gang doesn't like you for a personal reason (not professional), the ruthlessness will rear its ugly head and all kinds of absurd accusations will be leveled at you and your once secure, permanent, full-time position with the DoE will be no longer. No matter how hard you had worked and how passionate you were (in fact, I still am) about public education and about your teaching subject. The Dept. of EDUCATION of all govt. departments will lie and push you to the brink of taking your own life without a care in the world for you as a staff member or for your own children who would be left orphaned. It is a good place to work for 99% of people, it was good for me for 17 years, until I unluckily got on the wrong side of the wrong person for reasons too detailed to write here. Just watch your back if you choose to work for them.

High School Teacher
Teacher (Former Employee) - Sydney NSW - 17 May 2022
I dedicated 10 years to something that I loved, I was excited to go to work each day – however well before the pandemic schools have increasingly become the worst place to work! Crisis meetings are held regularly by executive staff and Principals to tackle serious growing concerns across all NSW schools such as significant teacher shortages and unsustainable workloads. Student's learning is neglected daily with classes often collapsed and covered by inexperienced casuals baby sitting classes. 10,000 or more teachers were sacked due to vaccines mandates placing significant pressure on schools to deliver learning to students already suffering during this tough time. The Education Minister and NSW Government need to seriously address the real world problems this profession is facing, until then it will continue to spiral downhill with teachers resigning daily. I do not recommend to anyone considering working here until these issues are addressed.
Cons
Teacher shortages, unsustainable workloads, much worse than a 9-5, always working during your holidays and weekends.

Great place to work! Highly recommended
Policy and Project Officer (Current Employee) - Parramatta - 12 April 2022
Despite being on a contract within the corporate sector, and with less security than a permanent position, the culture and collaborative nature have been a positive experience. Good conditions, ongoing training, good work/life balance and great management team that always supports and guides.
Pros
Salary, training, work-life balance
Cons
Contract based, less security.
