As a registered nurse the work was exhausting but most of the people I worked with were amazing. I had a lot of opportunities for professional growth

NSW Health great employer with a complex and difficult service demand

Worked across wards, to operating and recovery rooms areas in major tertiary public hospitalsThe management do what they can in face of never ending public patients with significant chronic health problems, frequently facing health challenges associated with a lifetime of poor health literacy. Having worked in private hospitals, where patients are usually well educated, with good health literacy, employed with good jobs to afford health insurance, the contrast is quite stark. As a generalisation, more complex health issues with public patients means work is more interesting. Private hospitals are not interested in dealing with patients with chronic health problems as there is no profit in it, but risk of expense blowouts due to adverse outcomes.

Pros

Well resourced in stock. Management care, but do have budgets.

Cons

Shift work

Terrible workplace

Management do not care about staff at all. Always adding more patients and tasks to do. And never filling sick leave. Also, forcing you to take your annual Leave when you do not want to.

Front line team awesome. Management terrible.

Wonderful frontline team. Dedicated and professional. Devious and undermining management, who are quick to blame and shame, but slow to recognise or acknowledge any good attributes of the staff. Almost corrupt. Gaslighting rife.

Pros

Great front line yea

Cons

Appalling management and HR

factory type mentality

there is zero satisfaction. it is an indoctrination factory.just ticking boxes. it isnt about healthcare.it isnt about preventive health care. it is all about managers making themselves look good flogging the underlings to get the workload done and they claim the success. there is no reward for effort.

Nursing

Always short staffed . Nursing staff are over worked and management don't care or understand what we are up against. Some people are very difficult to care for and are rude and demanding which adds to the stress and pressure I only enjoy my job when there are enough staff to help. I feel my job is secure and pay is ok but definitely should be higher due to being overworked due to lack of staff.

Policy driven and many opportunities for career advancement

It’s a Public Health Service at the end of the day it is under funded and staff are over worked. Bully is rife throughout and don’t get me started on tall poppy syndrome. All that aside, I loved the majority of roles I held over the years and built a 40 year career there.

Great

Working in casual pool is great. I can pick and choose the shifts that suit me. I recommend it to those that are looking for some flexibility.........

Great team work

A busy work area, but a great team. Working with the Multidisciplinary Health Team, it was great to see the progress of the Patients we cared for, and how every member of the team were involved in the care of those patients with the aim of returning them to their pre illness function and lifestyle. The hardest part of the job was the shift work.

Poor support in NSW rural hospitals

This is in regards to a rural remote hospital in NSW. Autonomous nursing. Little to no clinical support. Constant fear of staff Cutting, constant work load justification, inexperienced management, increased workload placed on nursing staff, poor doctor coverage, increased paper work taking you away from patient care. Constant problems with transport. Little is invested in small hospitals as it doesn't make money like the larger hospitals so budget is always tight and everything spent has to be justified even though it's standard practice in larger hospitals.

Pros

The nursing staff are brilliant and provide excellent care

Cons

Very little support, unable to progress in career

good workplace culture

Staffs are friendly and supported. However, I don't like the shift work hours. Either start the shift too early 6am or finish the shift too late at 11pm.

Rewarding career opportunities with some flaws in upper managemant

Highly rewarding job day to day. Patient care and on site staff was fantastic. Interdisciplinary teamwork and interdepartmental relationships between staff was all rewarding. Most enjoyable experiences were related to providing holistic patient centred care and improving patients experiences. There seemed to be some flaws in the top down management approach where upper level management mandates were not in line with day to day practices.

Pros

Highly rewarding experiences and development

Cons

Long hours, shift work, mediocre pay

Safe working environment

It's been my pleasure to work with NSW Health for last five years, though the working load is heavy, support from management and co-workers makes it fun. I love my work...my second home.

Pros

Good salary, secured

Cons

Short of staff, patient nurse ratio in wards is not fair

Bad job

The facility I am working in is very bad with staffing management, often short of staff. The facility has been cutting down on staffs to minimise its expenses to survive because of the low health sector funding from government, while the workload is physically heavy and damaging the health and well being of their staffs. The frontline staffs work like slaves everyday.

Pros

job security

Cons

heavy workloads

My SCN provides excellent opportunity for those passionate about advancing their neonatal expertise.

No 2 days are the same. Mix of neonates includes pre & late preterm. Congenital heart disease. Stabilisation of the sick neonate for Nets transfer. Congenital abnormalities. Sepsis. Jaundice. Respiratory distress. My unit works as a team. Friendly staff in all areas of the health care team.

Pros

Good parking.

Cons

Shortage of staff

Productive and friendly workplace

A typical day at work starts with signing in for work in the nurse bank then reporting to my allocated work area. I meet the team leader from that area and receive a handover before starting my job. The staff is usually friendly and welcoming wherever I go. Management is usually relaxed but professional in their conduct.

Pros

Free lunches on special occassions

Cons

Staff shortage resulting in work overload
