I’ve always enjoyed working for QAS and Qhealth
Paramedic/Registered Nurse (Current Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 18 April 2023
Have been a paramedic for nearly 20 years and a nurse for about 10 years - both are rewarding roles and I highly recommend both jobs as a career- management is pretty good and most days are good days - I really don’t have anything to complain about as I enjoy both my jobs - pay is good. Uniforms are supplied
Pros
Rewarding and both great companies to work for
Cons
Hours are long some days and very busy in Brisbane

An unhappy chapter in my life :(
Child Safety Officer (Former Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 8 April 2023
Do you like sitting down all day in a noisey open-plan office trying to focus on extremely stressful tedious and emotional work on the screen and a constant barrage of urgent emails and angry abusive phone calls? Then look no further. I worked here as a graduate and was very grateful to have the opportunity. After 6 months I had to leave as I was burnt out and felt terrible every day. I hated going to work. A year later and the experience still gives me chills. The staff turn over around me was outrageous with a distinct lack of experienced coworkers and people to be guided by. Or even a positive example to follow. The work follows you home and the stress is constantly on your mind. The department runs on cortisol and crisis. Everything is a nightmare from the IT systems to the overwhelming inefficient and suffocating paper work. Plus the outrageous work load they expect CSOs to fulfill and god help you if something goes wrong, which you cant control. It's all about not getting caught out by the lawyers and 'climbing the ladder' career wise. In the end, child safety has created a system that dispite its best intentions, does more harm than good to all involved; the children, the families AND the workers. Chronic health problems and personal vendettas are what keep people working there. If you want to be a healthy and happy person, this is a place to avoid unfortunately. I would strongly recommend not working here but you may have to find out for yourself. The attitude I would recommend you adopt is not focusing on outcomes for vulberable people and get -

Toxic culture at the very top
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & STATE ARCHIVIST (Former Employee) - Brisbane - 1 January 2023
Toxic culture starts at the top with ministers and senior bureaucrats. A complete lack of integrity and a culture of self preservation at the very top. They will betray anyone to look after themselves. All that you have heard about it is true. It has serious issues at the very top compensated by lots of very good people trying to do their best
Pros
Good staff at mid to lower levels
Cons
Toxic culture at the top with zero integrity most in senior officals

Toxic Bullying culture. Not a safe place for non neurotypical or disabled employees. Gossip across the HHS. Unfair unethical employment decisions.
Clinical Nurse/Midwife (Former Employee) - Mareeba QLD - 24 January 2022
Expected to work in a high stress environment and cover for staff sickness on going and then management blame you for hitting burn out and needing sick leave as a result from the working conditions.
Pros
Plenty of positions need filling. Nice area to live Affordable place to live
Cons
Work overload, lots of staff sickness, not an inclusive work place, no accommodations for disability, No empathy from management, Unethical decisions made gossip and lack of support or empathy, placed staff member in dangerous (potentially life threatening) situation, Not given appropriate time off- including time off call for WTE .8 etc

Wouldn’t go back.
Teacher (Former Employee) - Central Queensland Mc QLD - 21 January 2022
- Colleagues that speak down about their peers and students. - transfer lies that say we can get back home within three years which isn’t the case. - negative view of colleagues and management - never ending introduction of useless diagnostics that take time away from teaching. - prescriptive tools that take our autonomy away. - dangerous students and no way to protect ourselves - desks and chairs thrown. - ever increasing class sizes - lack of non-contact - lack of inclusion - terrible staff and student wellbeing.
Pros
Pay packet Holidays
Cons
Long hours Us and them mentality

Discouraging and stressful workplace people not game to speak the truth for fear of losing position
Former LOTE History Teacher at Qld Department of Education (Former Employee) - Gympie and Mary Valley - 9 December 2021
After trying to secure a permanent position with the Department of Education I resigned from the department after 6 years . All I was ever given was one month occassionally 2 month contracts never any offer of longer term work no matter where I applied and what school I worked at. Despite working long hard hours and trying very hard to do my best with very limited support from any member of the staff, very poor induction and training in the work place and distant management with little hands on assistance. Dealing with difficult behavioural problems and learning disabilities but given very little support, no opportunity to teach all time spent on behaviour management with children that should not be in mainstream schooling. Very discouraging. I do not recommend this employer. I am glad I am no longer teaching in this toxic environment. The dedicated teachers that put up with this deserve medals.
Pros
Maybe local country work available but rarely.
Cons
Long hours unrealistic expectations

Cons
Management stick together you have no chance

Warning - Do not apply!
CSO (Current Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 26 August 2020
I can not warn you enough do not apply for DOCS unless you want to ruin your career, ruin your health and possibly never work again. The Dept is toxic - all their stakeholders and clients do not like them - so it is hard working there when nobody likes the Dept - no matter how hard you try. You’ll be humiliated time and time again - most of the management are toxic. There is no supervision - even after experiencing some horrific events . If you’re a young social worker - don’t do it - you’ll ruin your career as most of the young ones walk out. Then that makes you look bad to get another job.
Pros
None
Cons
The events that are covered up by the govt and the CSO the scapegoat.

There needs to be a change in management at all levels and a review of standard qualifications to be accepted for practice.
Placement Student (Former Employee) - Wide Bay-Burnett QLD - 12 June 2020
There is a bad workplace culture at Child Safety and a mismatch of qualifications required to undertake all roles.
Specialist roles need to be filled with relevant core qualifications as a minimum e.g. Social workers, Social Welfare graduates, who possess as a minimum, a Bachelor Degree.
There also needs to be specialist training in OHS, Safety & Security of children so that staff are able to identify risks e.g. perpetrators, carers, partners, and physical and environmental risks etc.
This could be facilitated by collaboration with police in investigation etc. and Crime Prevention.
When OHS was raised at Team Meetings all staff would laugh, yet staff experience burn out and the organisation, the associated Workers Compensation costs.
Morale is low.
External Supervision should occur and not be as a group process to cut time.
The time for External Supervision should be allocated as work time and occur at least fortnightly and be undertaken off site.
Pros
N/a
Cons
Very Long Hours

Operational Services Officer/ Patient Services Officer (Former Employee) - Gold Coast QLD - 18 March 2020
Physically demanding, work rate is high have to get a lot done in a short amount of time. Team Leaders are not helpful they’re a good at seeing what’s wrong never uplifting the team in the work that they do. Not much support at all. Training is thorough but they do not allow progression in terms of higher roles.
Parking should be free

Relaxed, challenging and rewarding role
Business Support Officer (Current Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 23 February 2020
My work involves administration and project work.
Managing calendars and assisting with administration as and when required, including HR.
I have been introduced to BI, am working with Content Manager as a super user. I am also looking to learn Microsoft Teams, so I can be a more effective conduit for the team.

Great learning experience, starting from the bottom of the hierarchy. Learn a lot this way and opportunities to climb the ladder.
Inspector (Former Employee) - Thursday Island QLD and Cairns. - 16 January 2020
It all depends on which Department you work for. Enforcement Depts tend to have more stress than no enforcement. QG does try to look after it's employees. Job Security is solid. A change of management is too often due to promotions. Scope for moving into other areas of the Depts or to other departments.
