Loved working for Queensland health, with mental health client, nurses, drs, psychiatrists, social workers, admin. Executive and higher management have no idea the pressure all staff are under. Nos of clients allocated to workers is way too many. Workers request more help and management don't care. Suicide amongst workers happens too often, not coping with stressors. Never enough admin either, given more and more responsibility, no more money or staff.

Pros

Loved Working with drs and staff, learnt a lot about mental health issues. Able to work 4 days a week.

Cons

Very often couldn't get breaks, too busy. Not enough staff. Executive and bosses not approachable. Staff greatly stressed.

Bullies

QLD Health has a Bullying culture. If a manager does not like you, they will gaslight, make up stories and cause you to suffer emotional distress and enjoy watching that turn to anxiety. The Minister for Health and our upper Government officials only listen to upper management the people being bullied are not even a thought to them. They protect, encourage the workplace psychopaths

Pros

wages, super holiday and benefits great

Cons

The Culture is one of bullying

Great if you tow the line

Great place to work, just don't speak up or display any kind of forward thinking or you will quickly be put in your place. Perfect for those that are happy to just "go to work and do their job". Any extra effort that you put in is ignored and suggestions on improving workflow etc are not appreciated unless they come from a supervisor. Be a trained monkey and they will be happy. Don't bank on job security. Permanent positions are definitely offered on a "who you know", not "what you know" basis.

Pros

Good pay

Cons

No job security, Total apathy by supervisors, Impossible to be "heard" unless you're friends with somebody at the top of the food chain.

enjoyed working with QLD Health

I work at the QEII hospital Emergency Department as an Admin Officer. It is a very busy environment but I very much enjoy the fast paces nature of the department. I have the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team. The hardest part of the job is doing the shift work but this again at times works a benefit for me. I really the company of my colleagues. The job requires being active and up to date.

Pros

Closer to home and free parking

Friendly Environment

I worked here for two weeks in December (2018) and two weeks in January (2019), in the Workforce and Strategy Branch. The first week the branch was relocating to a different level, so I and my peer (another student) helped package the staff's belongings. The team was quite apologetic about not being able to give us work due to them relocating. But we had fun, as in real-life situations, sometimes you are faced with relocating. We mainly read articles, summarised points and so forth. It was interesting seeing some of the policies and strategies that they had created. It was overall a great learning experience with friendly staff.

Pros

Lot's of spare time

Cons

Not having any work sometimes

Rewarding Job

Working with great people , but very rigid in ways as government departments are . Were not open to change and money was wasted on things that were not productive.

Large organisation with work available in many different departments.

Being part of the Administration Casual Pool has allowed me to experience many different types of administration roles from front reception to back office in different departments within most of the locations on the Gold Coast. Each assignment has varied in length and I have gained considerable experience, met numerous people and made some valuable contacts.

Pros

Gaining a good insite into working in health.

Cons

No job security

Not a busy job

Breast screening was a great place to work except it was not a busy job, so I was very bored a lot waiting for customers to check in and arrive. I would highly recommend the job to anyone looking to get into the hospital.

Pros

good pay

Cons

Boring

Productive, team-oriented work environment with diverse workplace culture

A typical day at work consisted of using internal workplace systems for data entry and retrieval of information relevant to my job role. First point of contact for answering phone calls from both internal employees and external customers. Collected incoming mail and delivered outgoing mail. Required the use of systems such as SapHR, Springboard and Vader. Used Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word and Excel. Attended weekly meetings with my manager and other recruitment officers. Checked the fax machine for faxes received. Checked the inbox and categorised emails to recruitment officers. Processed Position Maintenance Requests and Organisational Unit Maintenance Requests. Sent through Application Kit Requests and Role Descriptions to Qld Health employees. Processed New Starter Paperwork for employees beginning a career in Qld Health. Processed Criminal History Checks for Qld Health employees. Processed Transfer at Level Applications for Qld Health employees. Processed Unsolicited Resumes for people looking to join Qld Health in areas such as environmental services, nursing and medical recruitment. Processed Invoices for clients such as Ricoh and Blaze, preparing GPVs. Processed Acceptance of Offers (ADHOCs and Packages) for Qld Health employees that have accepted their position within Qld Health.

Pros

Positive, team-oriented, friendly environment with helpful and supportive colleagues

Cons

High volume of work, understaffed, busy, high expectations from management

Good but not great...

A typical day at work is good, but needs improvements in some aspects to increase productivity. Management should look to the workers for inspirational ideas.

Once a month we have a group meeting to discuess our progress with any projects given

A typical day starts from 0800 to 1700 I would answer queries from hospitals, clients eg medical companies and sometimes from the general public but we mostly deal with hospital personnels and sales representative from companies, reply to emails sent and any tasks given to me by my work colleagues. Management is always helpful if you need advice on anything. My co-workers are helpful when needed assistance or advice. The hardest part of the job is that there is never enough time in the day it goes so fast. I enjoy the comarade of my work colleagues eg every Friday we go to the pub for lunch and let our hair down for a couple of hours

Pros

I learned heaps from this position and it was my very first permanent full-time poisiton I held

Cons

I wish it had lasted a bit longer with Queensland Health.

Staff Unity

Working in Qld Health for some years was one of the best times of my life. Staff unity is found at every level. Client satisfaction is upheld to all standards.

Fantastic service

Everyone just got in a did it. It was implicit that the client came first, and that is what we did. I learnt that we should never judge, well I knew that anyway; most people just need to be listened to; I couldn't hope for better management than this particular service - bare in mind that when I was working here, it was a non-government service- and it was an inclusive and collaborative style of management. The style was particularly attractive because it empowered women to speak out and express themselves in many wonderful and artistic ways, for some, the only way they could express themselves at the time. That kind of service is priceless.

Pros

Job satisfaction

Cons

Loss of the service as an NGO

Worked for six years as an Administration Officer, where I have gained a lot of skills and knowledge regarding Community Health and Hospital structure

Due to continual funding restrictions there are not too many permanent positions advertised at QLD Health. I am a very consciencous worker and I am looking to secure a permanent position to use my skills and allow myself to progress in my career. I have acquired so much knowledge during my temporary contracts over the last six years and enjoy interacting with staff members to work as a team member to deliver services with integrity and the high standard of work ethics I have. The hardest part of my job, is never being able to perfect a position as I have moved around so much. I am told that I do an excellent job but I would like to have a job to call my own instead of always learning new roles for short times. The enjoyable part is the opportunity to work with so many varied staff members.

Cons

At the end of each contract it is very stressful, (due to the uncertainty of getting another contract), I have only been without work for one week in 6 years.
