A fun place for artists, game designers and mathematicians to hone their skills in the gaming industry. For Infrastructure Engineers the work can be mundane as the network, storage and virtualisation technology isn't cutting edge. Not many opportunities for promotion and advancement in Australia.
Pros
Games Room, Relax Atmosphere
Cons
Sometimes unpredictable hours supporting and working for US masters and global customers.

Job Culture
Typical day consists of answering emails, working on long or short term projects, writing documentation, building systems for deployment, attending meetings and on the spot troubleshooting of IT systems installed in casinos and clubs around the world. Gaming industry isn't exactly cutting edge with respect to IT, consistency is what regulators, vendors and customers are looking for. It is one of the reasons why I am looking elsewhere. However this job would suit someone who likes consistency. Management like anywhere there are good and bad managers. However there is a strong collaborative culture and managers have training seminars to incrementally improve their skills. There are a few long term personalities who show signs of huberous. These traits in some people are the hardest to navigate and deal with. I have been largely successful but it is taxing at times. I would not expect it to be so different in any large established organisation. The people at SG are cool and there is a overwhelming sense of comradeship. It is the reason I stayed so long. If you are a talented artist or budding games mathematician SG is the place to consider working. It is a diverse working environment which is a strength because everyone has their own story to bring to the table. Forget what I said before about the gaming industry not being cutting edge, when it comes to actual game development it is fierce and cutting edge. IT not so much.
