Good place

Good but too much pressure and not enough training. Will work own your own most times and be a bit lonely when there’s no one else in store, Get paid overtime

Productive

High turnover with staff and management, so be aware of this! You will be asked to cover shifts last minute, too strict and sometimes not enough help in store as staff would keeping leaving. Overall average place to work, no career progression.

I enjoy working as a spendless star!

From team members to management and staff from other stores or states, employees at Spendless are very kind and supportive. I enjoy giving customers a memorable shopping experience in purchasing their shoes by following the four C’s of customer care. The pay and hours are very balanced and suitable to my needs.

Poor company practices

Dismisses staff for faulse allegations despite other team member's poor, inappropriate behaviour. Upper management expect everything to be done by one person and they get fired for not doing so. Instore manager is not allowed to reprimand team members for poor, inappropriate, disrespectful behaviour, upper management denies such behaviour and promotes those team members.

Underappreciated

Every staff member is underappreciated from head office. We all work extremely hard for little pay, no support , no acknowledgement. The roster system does not allow for family time and causal workers only get 6 hours a week.

Staff are not happy

I was made SM when I was at the interview for a sales job. I soon found out why. Most of the staff are not happy there. They find a new job and quit as soon as they can.

Fun workplace, bad pay

Company values their employees but not enough to pay them the adequate amount. Will forever be a great place to work if you want friendships. The workloads are easy unless staff are away and you get slammed with work with little to no help.

Fun work place, casuals don’t get many hours.

Great management (my store at least) as a casual it’s a relaxed workplace where nothing is too difficult, works well with my uni schedule, only downside is less than 10 hours a week and working alone can be difficult when you need toilet breaks and you’re not able to close the store without state manager approval. Sometimes have to work alone for 4+ hours.

Unethical Workplace Culture

Higher management needs some serious training in respect, compassion and leadership. Not only do they fail to do their jobs, they make it impossible for you to do yours. The stores are deliberately understaffed. The upper management uses intimidation and bullying tactics to control and manipulate their staff. If you are thinking of applying, DONT!

Pros

Literally Not A Thing.

Cons

Everything.

Bad management, No support, Stressful

Poor management, no support from area manager or direct manager.Unstable hours, 20 one week and 3 the next week. No hours promised. Hours threatened if KPI’s not met.Always something broken, store needs constant repairs, terrible and unsafe working conditions. Issues raised with management never reviewed and seldom fixed. Customers are allowed to be entitled with the stores ‘customers first’ rule.Basically no returns policy so customers will return shoes from years ago or wear shoes once then get a refund.

Do NOT work here

Extremely exahusting working environment. Working alone during peak hours, can't even afford a bathroom break. When issues arise, there is little to no support from management. Only when I decided to quit my job did my manager respond to my text messages. This behaviour just doesn't sit well with me.

The area manager made working here miserable

What is the best part of working at the company?Flexibility and meeting some lovely people What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Being in store alone, not having the freedom to use the bathroom when neededWhat is the work environment and culture like at the company?Toxic! The area manager is nasty! They gossip and only promote who they like or who sucks up to them. Never on merit. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Busy, repetitive, stressful being anxious you won’t meet personal/store budgets

Would not want my worst enemy to work here

- Management nasty and whole company had real “mean girl” attitude - Constantly spoken down to like you’re a child - All about being like a “family” and we’re all “sisters” but people will throw you under the bus for mistakes they made themselves in order to brown nose management- You are often left alone to run the store, which is fine, but if you need to go to the toilet you get in trouble because you have to close the store for 5 minutes- Promised to be able to get other shifts from sister stores when you’re a casual, however this is nearly impossible as so many other people are doing the same, your lucky to get 7 hours a week and when you say you can’t afford rent and need more shifts you are advised you “should be grateful for the shifts you get”- Store managers and second in charges gossip about you to higher ups so they can look good- If you do need a day off, you are made out feel like horrible person - Have to purchase the stores shoes to wear as uniform, with your own money that you are not reimbursed for.

Horrible management and culture, not allowed to use bathroom, low hours

Horrible

Got abused by this customer and management took their side. You work alone and can't go toilet without closing the whole store. Peak times are the worse since you got customers upfront, others needing help and the rest probably stealing the shoes. I liked my co-worker but they left too after they also got abused by a customer which left them traumatised where management only threatened to fire my co-worker. Shifts are all over the place too.

Boring but stable

Very boring place to work, tasks are very repetitive and every day is exactly the same. Managers are nice and friendly though and the casuals make a great team. Not much support from regional managers.

Do not work here

Co-workers are nice and lovely, however working at spendless shoes has probably been one of the most draining and stressful jobs i have ever worked for, the expectation that are put on us are unrealistic, travelling far just to do a three hour lunch cover shift isn’t worth the pay (unless you’re desperate).

Overall the worst place I've ever worked

Used to be good place to work but no longer is. They barely do enough to pass requirements. Mental and physical health of employees is not of concern. Some former employees have mental health issues because of this employer. DO NOT work for this company.

Pros

None

Cons

Short breaks, bullying from management, no real hot weather policy, daily worry about personal safety. Minimum pay but expect maximum effort.

Bad management

Lots of favouritism and bullying. Instructions are unclear then blame you for not doing a good job. The team members in store are lovely but everything else from the IT support to shipments, nothing is done properly.

Work anywhere else

The stores are usually small, maybe this is because of management or it's just the fact that there isn't much demand for Spendless Shoes. Still, due to this, there isn't much staff, and due to this, you'll usually find yourself working alone 9/10 and the times you aren't, you're working a very short shift to cover someones break because if you weren't, they'd have to shut down the entire store to use the restroom or grab a bite to eat. I think the culture surrounding the store and the work conditions, few hours (but the expectation that you devote your entirety to this job) lack of support, and the store itself, are why so many people quit. I won't lie, it's a great first job (if you get the proper training) but aside from that it isn't a job you do long-term unless you want to feel like doing a flip off a building all the time.

Good until it wasn’t

Upper management favouritism and toxicity is real - I took it with a grain of salt until it happened to me. In the end I had to rely on stores needing covers to get work while I sent out job applications and let me tell you, I was a busy busy lady - they couldn’t even acknowledge how valuable an employee I was when literally everyone else did. I’ve been in management ever since and I will never understand what they were thinking. They even hung up when they called a store and I answered! Can’t prove that it was them but … we would get another call later and if someone else answered, it was them. If I answered again, the person hung up again, and an email would come through. If things hadn’t gone down the way they had, I might still have been there. I really enjoyed working here. Pretty straightforward day to day, it was very organised and you knew what you needed to do. Communication within teams was easy. When I was there it was mainly casuals who worked the majority of the weekend, so they had a lot of trust in us, it was great to have a sense of autonomy like that. It made you take ownership and care about your store, product, and appreciate your colleagues. It also meant we actually did build relationships with our customers regardless of our position, so they liked us and were, mostly, nice. (It’s still retail)The environment in store was generally positive and supportive, small teams meant we really had each other’s backs, even between stores (casuals and sometimes 2ICs often covered at different stores). Some really amazing people in those stores, they’re just about -

Toxic

Very passive aggressive state management, hard to get into contact with for support but come at you if your store isn’t signing people up email subscriptions or adding on sales products. And also do by comparing each store in a chart each week with where everyone is at for budgets. If your not a favourite or suck, then you won’t hear a nice thing about your store. Constant staff turnover, mostly due to working 60% of the time by yourself with no breaks or anyone to cover shifts because there is only 4 staff max at a time, therefor you have to close to use bathroom. Only thing enjoyable is most people within your store are great and the pay for casual is great, and seeing the new ranges of shoes each week that arrive weekly
