PCW (Former Employee) –  Altona North VIC12 May 2019
Bullying, toxic work environment. Lack of support, orientation or training with existing staff showing open resentment towards working with new staff, regardless of their experience, training or competence. Blatant exclusion & isolation based on ethnic groups & identities. Disturbing lack of empathy towards residents who were often belittled & dehumanized when asking for help with everyday needs. Haphazard & unsafe manual handling practices together with a cut & paste manner of completing progress notes to make it appear care plans were being followed. The facility was consistently understaffed with care staff complaing they were "too busy" to take residents to the toilet or residents being left in wet beds until staff change over, and if complaints were made it was dismissed as being just their "behaviour". Many of the staff were just going through the motions & showed very little care or concern for residents.
Pros
Free parking & some very competant caring staff but those would number less than 40%
Cons
Not a good place to work

High and unrealistic expectations from management!
RN Div 1 (Former Employee) –  Clifton Hill VIC15 February 2019
Clifton hill: 10 stories nursing home with new model of care. Environment is nice. Modern technology. However, the workload is toooo heavy for nurses. PCAs administer medications. Medications are in resident’s own room. Nurses are still required to manage all floors’ non packed medications as PCAs are not trained to give loose pack meds. Low nursing staff ratio. You just work like a dog with no appreciation from management. They pick on your little mistakes and make big dramas. They will sack you at anytime. STAY AWAY FROM CLIFTON VIEWS!

Personal Care Worker (Former Employee) –  Frankston North VIC30 November 2018
Toxic bullying behavior and very sad making carers question why their in Aged Care. Management only care about the bottom dollar not a care in the world for their residents or staff. Cut backs leaving no linen for beds no towels for showers .don't get me started about incontinent aids or lack of. Intimidated by the management regarding calling in sick.
Lack of team work from alot of the workers unless you like to conform no use on reporting to the manager she's #1 bully
Pros
Beautiful residents who love to have a good chit chat
Cons
Picking up the mess that the last shift left behind. No support from the top

POOR POOR aged care home. Residents treated like cattle. WARNING!!!
PCW (Former Employee) –  Melbourne VIC8 August 2018
In all honesty I CANNOT recommend this group as fair and decent employers.

The preferred style of management is autocratic and staff are not included in any decision making processes. Staff are treated as objects, or tools to be used to maximize profits for the company.

Positive feedback and praise is NON - EXISTENT and one is left feeling unappreciated and undervalued yet their expectations are high.

Staff cutbacks have increased the workload for those on the floor, thus it may be reasonable to assume residents may not receive the timely care they request or require. Due to the OPPRESSIVE nature of the environment and POOR MORALE, staff turnover is high with many terrific carers and nurses resigning. Numerous individuals have been sacked and given very feeble reasons for the termination of their services. It could be deduced that the practice of challenging those in positions of authority is viewed in a very dim light, even if the aim is to promote healthy change and ensure best practice. Staff opinion is not a consideration and people may be subjected to suspensions or dismissal should they voice discontent or concerns associated with their roles. Various former staff members have alleged VICTIMIZATION / HARASSMENT.

Whilst the company openly admits to being "a business" with the aim being to generate profit for stakeholders, the general public is unaware that in order to do this satisfactorily, care delivery by definition, may be compromised. Many of the managers are Enrolled nurses rather than Registered Nurses and this creates problems in terms of RNs asserting
more... their legal rights whilst being under the direction of lesser qualified health professionals. The company does not employ a Director of Nursing or a Clinical Care Co-ordinator to oversee the performance of nursing staff, and it needs to be said with all respect that Enrolled Nurses do not have the skill, knowledge or education to direct or oversee the provision of gold standard resident care. Having studied the company website and the advertising spin, my personal opinion is that they fall short of the claims made.

The Care staff are marvelous, but they're overworked and underpaid for their contribution. However, there is an extremely large, well staffed administrative Head Office whose employees have enormous pull in the running of the company but are rarely sighted at the actual nursing homes, and if they ARE it is to resolve some issue that threatens company reputation.

Letters to HR expressing concerns are not acknowledged, and one is not provided with any feedback and/or information that may have resulted from investigations (indeed one would NOT even know whether their issue had been considered or addressed!) Morale is currently at an all-time low, and should anyone dare to enquire as to the reason for rapid, unanticipated, seemingly unproductive change employees are told they have choices and if they do not "like" the direction the facility is taking then they should leave....NOW! With that sort of response forthcoming it is no wonder that employees actually take management at it's word and GO!

Still no reasonable explanation has been given for the implementation of apparently drastic alterations to operations at ground level. As the company is in the throes of extending one of their facilities by 60 beds, one must ask whether this attitude will ensure they have adequate staff numbers to man it!! I for one would certainly never recommend anyone seeks employment with this privately owned and operated business.
Having said all that and expressed my personal opinion I must say that the carers are terrific and deserve to be treated with more dignity and respect than they are accorded.

The elderly residents are wonderful, they're a joy to care for and the wisdom and experience they continue to impart is precious beyond measure.
I have learned through my time with TLC that money & profits rather than altruism & benevolence form the basis for establishing aged care facilities.

I believe that there is no small measure of exploitation occurring in all privately owned concerns and I find this disturbing. It is my feeling that nursing homes/residential facilities should NO longer be be the domain of private sector enterprises, but revert back to the public sector for management by the Dept of Health & Ageing and be operated by appropriately educated, skilled, qualified health care professionals who have committed themselves to caring for the elderly for all the "right" reasons.

In the years i have spent working at Royal Freemasons i have learnt to appreciate the staff and residents and offer a better quality of life to not only all in the work place but also in life outside the work place i have enjoyed working with the elderly in their everyday needs and learnt to appreciate life alot more, the staff and manager was great to work with and very understanding with each individual needs of staff and residents, the hardest part of my job was when you dont realise the impact that someone you have cared for so long suddenly passes away, the most enjoyable part of my job was getting to spend quality time with each resident listening to them talk about their family, and grand children the expression on their faces and the memories they share with you is breath taking.

I was always greeted warmly by the Staff at TLC - The Homestead & Lakes. All Staff members where willing to teach/guide me in all tasks.
The residents were extremely kind & welcoming helping to guide me also. The Management are a wonderful group of ladies who are willing to help further my education & career path in Aged Care.
TLC - The Homestead & Lakes have created an excellent Facility which is warm and homely while still maintaining a level of sophistication. I really enjoyed getting to know the residents the most.

NOT a pleasant work environment.
Personal Care Worker (Former Employee) –  Altona North VIC13 April 2017
Management are unappreciative and unapproachable.
You will be called in to see the manager for any sick leave/carers leave, even if you have medical certificates and plenty of accrued sick leave....and then you'll be forced to take annual leave even if it's not an appropriate time for you to take it.
The diversional therapy/activities for the residents is virtually non existent and staff are expected to deal with difficult behaviours despite often being short staffed.
Management will not support staff if they are bullied or verbally abused by visitors/family members.
General feeling amongst staff is fear/that they are being watched/will be called out for some trivial matter.
Pros
The staff that work tirelessly to keep the residents happy, and the residents themselves.
Cons
Unpleasant work environment, management ignores your ideas for a better work place for all.

Toxic and bullying culture
Personal Care Assistant (Former Employee) –  Altona North VIC5 August 2016
I worked here for a short amount of time and left because it was not what I signed up for when I wanted a career in aged care. This place nearly made me walk away from the whole industry. It is old style institutionalised care, that is run under pressure of having residents toileted, showered and dressed by 10am. If you do not complete these tasks by the set time, you are called into meetings to explain your time management skills. Residents are being forced out of bed in the mornings still asleep. You will not have the tools to complete your job and the basic rights of pads are under lock and key. The place is constantly under staffed because they refuse to pay extra money to have agency staff cover the short fall. If you are sick, you will be called into the general managers office to explain yourself, even if you have a medical certificate. There is a bullying culture which starts from the general manager and works its way down to the staff that have worked there for 10+ years. Head office is aware of this, but they do nothing to fix the problem and turn a blind eye. It is all about profits and nothing about resident care. If you ask any of the staff if they would put their parents in this facility, the majority will all answer no. You will always see TLC advertising for Personal Care Workers. This is because staff turnover is very high.
Pros
The staff that do care and that work for the right reasons, not just for a pay cheque
Cons
Bullying Culture, toxic culture

Personal Care Worker (Former Employee) –  Wallington, VIC28 January 2016
The pace was very fast and other staff members could be very unhelpful to new starters.

The most enjoyable part of the job was working with residents.

There was never enough supplies and things like gloves and towels etc which you need to perform your job hygienically were always in short supply.

There was very little work life balance and it was the norm to be called in to do a morning shift with only half an hours notice.
Pros
Close to home
Cons
Very unsympathetic rostering
