A secure job

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Worked here for over 11 years and felt valued as a worker in my time there. Was given part time contract as were nearly all staff but that has probably changed now (I left in 2019). Cons in hindsight that I didn't realize at the time as I had no other job to compare it to are the fairly low hourly rate, and I worked really hard as well so it's a bit regretful to realise now I could've made much more money doing far less work instead for ten years.

Productive and fun to work

The deli department and store manager are very friendly, all work together. No stress at all. I always enjoy working with team members. Learning new things from time to time and even cross-department training.

garbage

woolworths are only ever concerned about cutting hours and making the most profit. consistently understaffed during peak hours and management never helped

Good flexibility

Great job while you are a student. Good flexibility with hours and shifts. But managers make you feel awful for calling in sick. Sustained a back injury while leaning in the deli case all the time.

slow

slow paced. management never actually cared about staff. no way of advancing in career as management only cared about brown nosers. never actually offered any support to workers.

Good workplace if you can put up with management and occasional rude customers

Pros - good hours and pay, the co-workers really make or break a shift, 5% staff discountCons - can get quite overworked if your department is understaffed, resulting in annoyed customers (most are understanding though), management was an ordeal, especially if you want to go to a different department

Very productive and good team work

Day to day tasks included cleaning, cooking, slicing meats and cheeses and helping customers. It was a good environment and friendly team. We had good regular customers who are a delight, but you'll always have rude ones too (which is tolerable). Team work is good, no one slacked off much. There will always be staff that gossip behind your back, but it's something you ignore and don't care about eventually. Other than that, it becomes very busy and stressful during festive seasons. But other days are so boring and quiet.

Eh

Not great had little training and management was rude and uncaring. Didn’t get many hours either and ultimately moved on somewhere else. Good for students though

Good place to work.

within the department is great hours if you’ve been there long enough, and know how to close or open. Upper management is rough on staff but great stable place to work.

Can be great at times

Job is good in the sense that it keeps you busy, and most staff members work hard. However, the store suffers from a massive issue or understaffing and the deli cops it hard as a result. Nothing has been done to rectify it within the last year unfortunately.

Great work culture

Great training and very friendly team. I learnt alot about customer service and the handling of food. The team is like a little family and very supportive

Very stressful high pressure job

From November 2021, I was employed as a part time Fresh Service team member working in the deli department. At first, I seemed to be doing well despite the fact that my on the job training was rushed and I mostly learnt from doing online courses. But I quickly learnt that the deli is a very toxic work environment. Some of the team members were very easy to work with, hard working and friendly but others were cliquey, rude, nasty, bossy and not very accommodating. I had to multi task between serving customers, rotating and topping up stock, cleaning dishes, doing deep cleans etc. I was physically and emotionally exhausted after every shift. And if you don't get all the jobs done during your shift, you end up copping it from the manager. I hardly felt supported by the management at Woolworths in Sale. I was fortunate to have a few coworkers that I could vent to and confide in. But ultimately the stress of the job and the deterioration in my mental health forced me to resign after nearly 12 months. I think it was more of a store problem than a company problem but still I probably wouldn't work for Woolworths again after my experiences there.

Pros

Plenty of shifts/hours available, online training courses, team discount card, some great coworkers

Cons

Horrible management, toxic work environment, very stressful job, not good for your mental health, don't feel valued or appreciated

Positive

Fun/easy going people. Positive work environment. Enjoyed working there.Typical day involved serving customers and maintaining clealiness of the Deli, and putting Deli stock on shelves.

Busy store. Fast paced environment

High staff turnover, low training opportunities. The store is one of the busiest in Australia and there is a large portion of transient staff, ie backpackers

Average workplace

Standard supermarket work. Management doesnt really listen to lower level employees. Night shift employees never see any of the company rewards such as staff meals or any appreciation from higher up. Pay is standard although they underpaid me for quite a while.

Terrible place to work

Management is basically non existent and the job was incredibly stressful. Understaffed all the time and the people they did hire could hardly wipe a bench to save their life.

Cons

Hard and stressful environment

I worked for Woolworths for almost 1 year. I was meant to be working as night fill but instead got put into deli. Department managers are okay but the store managers don’t care about staff and don’t communicate. Hours were cut for the deli and they refused to hire more staff even tho the deli was always understaffed. Working as casual meant going from getting 5 shifts a week to 1. Department manager would give more shifts to people that they liked/ or had worked there for a long time, shifts were not evenly distributed. If you called in sick you would not get shifts for the next week. Deli was overall very hard, so much pressure to cook food when there was a line of customers waiting. New staff would not get trained properly. I worked at night shifts which were the worst. Had to clean the whole deli in 3 hours while serving customers and working with new people. When there was a regional manager coming in to look we had to deep clean EVERYTHING with only two people on shift. Pay was low for the responsibilities. Always rushed to finish everything and would be exhausted. People from other departments would come to help only to not be trained and would slow everything down ( not the workers fault). Co-workers we’re nice but that was about it.

Pros

Nice do-workers

Cons

Long hours, low pay, bad management

Pressure to perform duties of more staff due to cutting hours continously. Mandatory jabs

43 years ago was a fabulous company and part of a family, now staff are disposable, just a number. Just like a number, disposable.I had a workplace injury, needed both shoulders operated on, was treated poorly by management and workcare, I suggest you dont injure yourself

Pros

Good working hours

Cons

Stressful
