Uncomfortable first day at work!

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Workplace environment is great but I really appreciate a supervisor or a buddy to come over and show me the rope’s a bit more, staff are friendly but they seem to show lack of interest in showing the new employee’s on what to do and I barely seen any managers on sight so it seems like fend for yourself situation.

fine. improvements can be made

fine, management could be better organised. good place for first time job for youth, however pay increases as workers get older should be greater than they are

Flexible and good team environment

Good place to work for students in high school as the hours are flexible. There is a strong sense of community and you are made to feel apart of the team.

A little all over the place

What can I say about working here... well, they'll tell you they are "flexible" but in reality, not so much. Don't bother putting your availability in with them unless you like to be rostered on when you've stated you're unavailable. I've had a a few sneaky shifts added to my roster without my consent. We've had so many manager changes in the last 3 months, it's getting ridiculous. I've also been asked if I could come in AFTER handing in a medical certificate (by 2 different managers on the same day). The only thing I like about this job are my fellow colleagues. Easy to get along with and super friendly. This is just at my store, though. Not sure if other stores are better, the same or worse.

Pros

Penalty rates, friendly co-workers

Cons

Management, rosters, communication between staff and managers

Woolworths can be a great place to work depending on the team commitments and the management

I’ve learned a lot working for Woolworths, there’s ability to grow and excel, as long as you have a good team and management. It’s a gray place to work

Pros

Snack provided, team discount

Cons

Hours due to change

don't bother

not worth the stress. pay is okay on it's face but you won't be given enough hours for it to add up anyway so it doesn't matter. culture is terrible, bad communication between departments, management is useless allllll the way up the line. half the people in charge don't understand the work that the people below them are doing because they've never done it, so the way they manage them makes no sense and frustrates the workers. constant cuts to hours, budgets etc. no help from higher management when it comes to things stores need (i.e. needing more trolleys - they never get fixed or ordered)

Pros

free food in the break room, the everyday rewards extras are pretty okay, pay isn't terrible

Cons

not very flexible, bad management, bad communication

Okay first job

Fast paced, slow career building if hand picked for positions. Long hours but various shift. Okay pay but sustainable. Workload large and ever growing

Overall a good experience and stepping stone

I have had an overall pleasant experience working for Woolworths. The department you work in highly impacts your experience, with some departments being better than others. Your direct line manager will also be highly dependent, as well as your store. Being such a large company it is hard to give a comprehensive review because every store, every manager operates differently. There is room for flexibility in the job, and job security once you can get a part-time contract. However, over the recent years the cost cutting is apparent, and some people struggle to get their desired number of hours

Great place to work

I started at Woolworths doing night fill when my kids were young, 10 years later and I had worked in a variety of departments, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Woolworths, I worked with a great group of people and I enjoyed the variety that the company had to offer.

Fun

my experience at Woolworths has been both fun and sometimes exhausting. depending on the manager. overall I would recommend working for Woolworths retail as part time and short period.

Friendly team but never enough hours to get all the work done

We are always chronically understaffed in every department; so we have to do what we can with the hours available - customer service first priority so nightfill is often left till last. Everyone works hard but I think sometimes managers don't see that; as with any place. But the team is friendly; the work is easy enough; and the pay and benefits are adequate. So can't complain too much!

Good place

Fair payment as a casual worker and get paid weekly. You can work in different departments and learn more skills. They only hire if you're young. Good first job.

Managers suck coworkers suck

Horrible fired me out of nowhere no job security. Suspiciously fired me on the day my 6 month probation was up but not for performance related issues. Managers never recognized hard work and favoured some employees. There was no loyalty between employees and overall environment was cold.

Mentally and physically draining

Just hit 6 years this year and other than management, not much has changed. Lots of responsibilities with little time to do them. If your department’s understaffed, the “help” you get is usually people from other departments who you have to assist anyway, so is it really help? You can also get forced to come in to work when you are sick (whether you are a department manager or not), which is odd considering that you are working with food. Also, there are no hours available until “special visitors” come to the store and everyone is suddenly obliged to make it as nice and presentable to people who don’t even care. It’s not all bad. Discounted groceries and/or Qantas points are some of the perks that come with the Team Member card. High school and Uni students can definitely work here to fit their busy schedules, as the company offers various start and end times unlike typical 9am-5pm companies. Extra hours are also up for grabs which can boost your pay a bit (especially during public holidays). Contracts are also flexible (I only work 3 days with the option to work extra), which enables you to either find another job, socialise etc. So not that bad, not too great either.

The people I work with were sensational and its a pretty easy job, goes along with the pay.The rostering can be really dodgy and bad communication between managers and workers
