Woolworths Supermarket insights
Areas for improvement
- Sense of belonging
- Ability to meet personal goals
- Energising work tasks
don't bother
Proactive Team Member (Current Employee) - Emerton NSW - 21 November 2023
not worth the stress. pay is okay on it's face but you won't be given enough hours for it to add up anyway so it doesn't matter. culture is terrible, bad communication between departments, management is useless allllll the way up the line. half the people in charge don't understand the work that the people below them are doing because they've never done it, so the way they manage them makes no sense and frustrates the workers. constant cuts to hours, budgets etc. no help from higher management when it comes to things stores need (i.e. needing more trolleys - they never get fixed or ordered)
Pros
free food in the break room, the everyday rewards extras are pretty okay, pay isn't terrible
Cons
not very flexible, bad management, bad communication

Stable but frustrating
Department Manager (Current Employee) - Western Australia - 16 November 2023
Can be great, can be awful. Upper management can be incredibly frustrating and out of touch with the demands placed on team members. Salaried department managers can be moved between shops with no consultation.

it’s ok
Fresh Service Team Member (Current Employee) - Eight Mile Plains QLD - 13 November 2023
the job isn’t too bad but the management is terrible, always staffing you alone and finding things to complain about or just targeting you. the store assistant manager currently is a horrid person.

5+ years of misery
Night Fill Team Member (Former Employee) - Melbourne VIC - 12 November 2023
Toxic work environment. Favouritism. Not appreciated by upper management. Change of hours to cut costs and save on penalty rates. Mental health not taken into consideration.

Jobs at Woolworths Supermarket
Fast paced environment
Retail Assistant (Current Employee) - Brisbane QLD - 8 November 2023
Great place for focus on career development if you want it. Fast paced environment. Workplace culture needs improvement as unrealistic expectations and toxic management can occur but can also be treated.

Chaotic
Night Filler (Current Employee) - West Lakes SA - 6 November 2023
Very disorganised, poor rostering and mostly unhelpful management staff. If you have an inquiry be prepared to be sent to 300 others and still not leave with an answer.

Horrible
Checkout Operator (Former Employee) - Camperdown VIC - 30 October 2023
hated working there, if you want to work at woolies don’t go on checkouts. stressful, boring, and always dreaded it before going into work. if i had a choice now i would’ve asked to swap areas before quitting

Good work if your casual or part-time.
Department Manager (Former Employee) - Southport QLD - 29 October 2023
Upper management such as state managers and regional managers are power hungry and all politics. Department managers depending on store are okay, again the same with store managers. Work load is okay if you are casual or part-time, pay also okay. However if your full-time, dept manager or assistant manager you are not paid enough compared to your work load.
Pros
Pay is okay for work load if casual or part-time. Can create great friends.
Cons
Upper Management never listens or protects their managers or workers. Rare recognition for efforts.

Very stressful
Deli member (Current Employee) - Nsw - 28 October 2023
I only give 3 stars because the managers try to listen but however I believe the staff and cost cutting is an upper management issue that angers alot of Deli workers as you are forced to close the entire deli down in 3 hours which is impractical, I was already struggling enough to get the jobs done but then they cut my finish time down by half an hour adding even more pressure to finish closing down, they also removed having an extra worker in the deli which is a complete joke because upper management has zero idea of just how much stress they’re putting their workers through because they have zero idea of the amount of tasks they have to complete in an impractical short amount of time and when the Assistant store manager and store manager speak to you it’s just “we can’t do that, but if you need help just call for someone” which would be great advice except for the fact that when I actually need help, nobody who is trained has been rostered on in the store so I’m left to do it all myself (managers do help but I think the issues are above their power). I’m glad to read that I’m not the only one getting so angry with all these changes, nobody likes these changes, but yet woolworths acts like they have their employees at the centre of their care when making these choices but they do not. I’ve discussed this problem more times than I can count fingers on both hands. I used to like working here and would have given 5 stars 3 years ago… But that’s when I was being listened to..

Managers suck coworkers suck
Team Member (Former Employee) - Fitzroy VIC - 23 October 2023
Horrible fired me out of nowhere no job security. Suspiciously fired me on the day my 6 month probation was up but not for performance related issues. Managers never recognized hard work and favoured some employees. There was no loyalty between employees and overall environment was cold.

it’s ok, management is not the best but flexible with what days you work. Pay is average but overall it’s a decent place to work for starters. Pick Packing is very fast paced

Company is only concerned with growth and profit
Shop Assistant (Former Employee) - Perth WA - 22 October 2023
Management can make or break your job, unfortunately I was in a store where management broke it. Company's concern is not customers or team members- wages and profits are the important aspects of the company. Team members can be amazing, met some great people at Woolworths. Range of hours is great if you cannot work standard hours

Mentally and physically draining
Team Member (Current Employee) - Wetherill Park NSW - 21 October 2023
Just hit 6 years this year and other than management, not much has changed. Lots of responsibilities with little time to do them. If your department’s understaffed, the “help” you get is usually people from other departments who you have to assist anyway, so is it really help? You can also get forced to come in to work when you are sick (whether you are a department manager or not), which is odd considering that you are working with food. Also, there are no hours available until “special visitors” come to the store and everyone is suddenly obliged to make it as nice and presentable to people who don’t even care. It’s not all bad. Discounted groceries and/or Qantas points are some of the perks that come with the Team Member card. High school and Uni students can definitely work here to fit their busy schedules, as the company offers various start and end times unlike typical 9am-5pm companies. Extra hours are also up for grabs which can boost your pay a bit (especially during public holidays). Contracts are also flexible (I only work 3 days with the option to work extra), which enables you to either find another job, socialise etc. So not that bad, not too great either.
