Writing Effective Job Descriptions and Titles

Writing a good job post helps you find the right people for your job. On Indeed, good job titles and descriptions help more people see your jobs. They also help you attract better candidates.

How to Write a Good Job Title

A clear and concise job title helps job seekers quickly understand the role and its level. This improves the chances of them finding and applying for your job.

Keep it short and clear.

  • Explain what the job is.

  • If you want a person from a certain field, add that to the title. For example, ‘Pharmaceutical Sales Representative’ is better than ‘Sales Representative’.

Say what the job level is.

  • If the job is for a certain level, like a junior role, you can add that. For example, 'Junior Accountant' is clear.

Don't use:

  • Titles that are too long

  • Short forms or numbers that job seekers won't know

  • Exclamation marks

How to Write a Good Job Description

A clear job description helps people decide if they are right for the job. It tells them about the pay, the work, the skills needed and what your company is like.

Include details on compensation and benefits.

  • A good job post should list the pay and benefits.

Provide details on the job type.

  • Is the job part-time or full-time?

  • Is the job on-site, remote or hybrid?

  • If on-site, where is the job located?

  • Is shift work required?

Add requirements for the job.

  • What is this job about?

  • What are the required skills or education?

  • How many years of experience are required?

  • Are any licences required?

Use gender-neutral words

Using words that are gender-neutral can help more people apply for your job. This means you will reach job seekers of any gender.

Examples:

  • Instead of 'Businessman' use 'Business Person'

  • Instead of "Craftsman" use "Artisan"

  • Instead of 'Doorman' use 'Door Attendant'

Add a company description.

The company description should include important facts about your company, its culture and what it offers employees.
