About Ravenhall Correctional Centre

Ravenhall is a 1,300-bed medium-security prison for adult sentenced and remand men. Its contemporary campus-style design reflects four accommodation communities with varying profiles. Community accommodation is complemented by a further 75-bed Forensic Mental Health Unit, a 25-bed unit for prisoners with significant challenging behaviours, and a 25-bed Mission Unit designed to respond intensively and therapeutically to current community issues.

In recognition of the importance of the Continuum of Care, Ravenhall extends its presence into the community by providing ex-prisoners with access to post-release support at GEO’s Community Reintegration Centre.

Ravenhall’s emphasis on offender rehabilitation and reintegration is supported by a significantly resourced team of clinicians who work in partnership with a number of Victoria’s most respected organisations, including Forensicare, YMCA and Kangan Institute. Working collaboratively, Ravenhall seeks to bring about lasting positive change in the lives of prisoners before and after release, with the ultimate aim of reducing reoffending.

About the Opportunity

The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Specialist will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and will provide support to reduce AOD related harms for clients who have exited Ravenhall Correctional Centre. The AOD Specialist will provide a range of assessments and counselling interventions to assist clients to change harmful behaviours and increase their capacity to effectively manage the issues they are experiencing associated with AOD use. In doing so they will promote recovery and meaningfully contribute to positive reintegration outcomes. The AOD Specialist will work collaboratively with stakeholders to focus upon the health and wellbeing of people who are preparing to exit or who have recently exited custody who have a history of AOD use.

As the AOD Specialist you will:

Provide high quality engagement, assessment, treatment, and support services to individuals through evidence based, therapeutic interventions.
Undertake assessments as required to ascertain information on substance abuse history, mental health and risk.
Develop formulations and treatment plans and deliver effective counselling interventions within a harm reduction and trauma-informed framework including to clients with complex needs.
Prepare and complete case notes and effectively, efficiently, and accurately manage client data entry into identified systems.
Provide information, education, and practical assistance to clients to help them to reduce the harms of their substance use.
Provide clients with exit and post treatment support plans to offer them appropriate support to maintain treatment gains.
Contribute to case-management planning and case reviews and community reintegration plans.
Collaborate with custodial and non-custodial staff, Forensicare, Correct Care, Alliance Partners, and other providers, to develop effective working relationships.
Participate in supervision and professional development opportunities consistent with the role.
Participate in community activities and relevant cultural and religious celebrations.

Your Skills & Experience

A relevant tertiary health qualification such as social work, counselling, psychology, nursing, or a Certificate IV in AOD, Diploma in AOD, or equivalent extensive experience in the AOD sector.
Demonstrated experience in AOD assessment, harm minimisation education, and person centred care and recovery-focused support for people with AOD concerns and dual diagnosis.
Demonstrated contemporary knowledge of AOD harm minimisation principles and strategies.
Experience working to a schedule and a commitment to meeting Key Performance Indicators.
Experience completing quality client case notes, treatment summaries and reports and entering data into information management systems.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to build and maintain positive collegial and stakeholder relationships.
A commitment to professional development through participation in further training, supervision, and mentoring.
Demonstrated knowledge of the Victorian Criminal Justice System including the role of the Courts, prisons, parole and community corrections
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others both cross-agency and as part of a multidisciplinary team of professionals.

Desirable:

Experience providing AOD services in correctional environments.
