About Rainbow Fresh

Rainbow Fresh Farming PTY LTD (Rainbow Fresh), located in Lewiston, South Australia 5501 is a family-owned business that grows, harvests, processes and packs fresh produce, with a strong focus on leafy green salad products supplied to South Australian and surrounding markets.

Position Description

Rainbow Fresh is seeking a full time Vegetable Grower to plan, coordinate and perform farming and market garden operations for the production of high-quality leafy green vegetables and salad crops. The role will be involved in all stages of crop production, including soil preparation, planting, irrigation, crop maintenance, pest and disease monitoring, harvesting and post-harvest coordination.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Vegetable Grower will be responsible for:

  • Planning and coordinating the production of vegetable crops from seed selection and soil preparation through to harvest, taking into account environmental factors, seasonal crop plans and market demand.
  • Organising vegetable farming operations and routines, including collecting, storing, grading and packaging leafy green vegetables and salad crops.
  • Coordinating the post-harvest handling and despatch of vegetables to meet production schedules, customer orders and market requirements.
  • Planning and overseeing the use and maintenance of vegetable farming infrastructure, including farm equipment, machinery, sheds, water supply systems and irrigation syst
  • Preparing land, beds and growing areas for the planting of leafy green vegetables and salad crops.
  • Maintaining and reviewing crop production records, harvest yields, irrigation data and other farm production information to support crop planning and production outcomes.
  • Selecting, planting and cultivating seeds or seedlings in accordance with crop plans and seasonal production requirements.
  • Monitoring crop growth, soil condition, water requirements and environmental factors affecting production.
  • Operating and overseeing irrigation systems to maintain optimal growing conditions.
  • Identifying and managing pests, diseases, weeds and other crop health issues.
  • Applying fertilisers, soil treatments and crop protection products in accordance with safety and production requirements.
  • Coordinating crop harvesting activities to meet production schedules, quality requirements and customer demand.
  • Supervising, guiding and training farm workers and contractors involved in planting, crop care, harvesting and post-harvest activities.
  • Ensuring farming operations comply with workplace health and safety, food safety and quality assurance requirements.

Required Skills and Experience

Applicants should have:

  • Formal qualifications with at least 1 year of demonstrated work experience Or 5 years of work experience if no formal qualification is held.
  • Knowledge of crop production cycles, soil preparation, irrigation, pest control and harvesting processes.
  • Ability to operate or supervise the use of farming equipment and machinery.
  • Understanding of food safety, hygiene and quality requirements in fresh produce production.
  • Ability to supervise staff and coordinate daily farming activities.
  • Good record-keeping and communication skills.
  • Relevant qualifications in agriculture, horticulture or a related field are desirable.
