About the Role
The function of the DNA Analysis Unit is to DNA profile samples obtained from biological material from exhibits.
Note: based on business need, this role may include transfer for defined periods to other work units within BSG.
Key Accountabilities include:
- Undertake routine biological casework and DNA profiling with development towards some degree of complexity over time as part of a team and be responsible for providing a timely and quality forensic science service in a multi-skilled environment. Provide casework statistics to senior management
- Undertake the interpretation of DNA profiling related examinations. Initiate problem identification and develop strategies to further investigate methods and procedures within the complexity of the position.
- Participate in accreditation duties and obligations as required.
- Make judgements with limited direction in the provision of expert specialist advice to customers in line with experience and developing knowledge.
- As part of a team assist in relevant research and development projects, and training, which improve and expand methodology as part of the Department's standing as a national and internationally recognised “centre of excellence”.
- Present expert opinion evidence in Courts of law relating to multi-disciplinary skills in an impartial and concise manner.
- Maintain appropriate knowledge of Victoria Police and Department's policies, procedures and legislation and assist in any duties derived from those.
Skills & Experience
- Scientific/technical achievement, ability to interpret examinations and to successfully present technical and discipline related knowledge and advice to scientific/technical and non-scientific personnel at all levels, particularly in a Court context.
- Proven commitment to quality in casework and/or research or the ability to provide it.
- Well-developed specialist subject knowledge with an emphasis on forensic science.
- Proven ability to work autonomously and/or within a team environment.
- Ability to conduct scene examinations where little or no supervisory advice is available.
- Demonstrated Conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.
- A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct and the Organisational Values.
Requirements and relevant information:
- Ongoing FO-3 position available.
- Position is located at 31 Forensic Drive Macleod.
- A relevant tertiary qualification is required.
- An approved degree or a post graduate degree in science. Major studies in Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular biology and Statistics would be desirable.
- The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only).
- The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
- Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
