Safe Steps is the only 24/7, family violence response centre in Victoria, providing a “state-wide entry point” for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Services include information and referral, crisis response, specialist family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation.

Job Description



THE ROLE

We are looking for a compassionate and resilient Overnight Support Worker to join our Residential Services team in a part-time 0.8 FTE position.

Working overnight within our supported accommodation program, you will provide practical and emotional support to victim-survivors, conduct risk and needs assessments, support safety planning, and contribute to a safe and welcoming environment. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference during critical periods of crisis and transition.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide overnight support to adult and child victim-survivors in supported accommodation
  • Conduct initial risk management planning and needs assessments for new arrivals
  • Complete safety planning and support clients experiencing distress or uncertainty.
  • Assess and respond to family violence risk using the MARAM framework.
  • Manage and action handover items to ensure continuity of care and service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records.
  • Participate in team meetings, supervision and ongoing professional development.

Desired Skills and Experience



KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Experience in a support, residential, or community services role
  • Understanding of the specialist family violence sector in Victoria
  • Ability to work effectively in a demanding environment while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse communities
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond positively to changing priorities
  • High level of resilience and commitment to self-care practices
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, inclusive, and culturally safe practice
  • Current or willingness to obtain:
    • Working with Children Check
    • National Police Check
    • Level 2 First Aid
    • Driver’s Licence

Qualifications in community or social services are desirable.
