Job Description

Join the clinical team at Cairns Private Hospital as a Casual Hospital Medical Officer and provide high-quality medical care to patients across a range of clinical areas.

In this role, you will support the management of hospitalised patients across surgical, medical and rehabilitation wards. Working collaboratively with Visiting Medical Officers, nursing staff and allied health professionals, you will contribute to safe, effective and timely patient care.

About You

You are a dedicated and compassionate medical practitioner with sound clinical judgement and a strong commitment to delivering safe, high-quality patient care.

You communicate effectively with patients, families and members of the multidisciplinary team and are confident working in a busy hospital environment. You are able to recognise and respond appropriately to changing patient conditions and work collaboratively with senior medical staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide medical assessment and ongoing care for hospitalised patients across surgical, medical and rehabilitation wards.
• Conduct comprehensive admission assessments and develop appropriate management plans.
• Order and interpret appropriate investigations within scope of practice.
• Collaborate with Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs), nursing staff and allied health professionals to coordinate patient care.
• Respond to clinical emergencies and initiate appropriate first-line management.
• Recognise and escalate clinical deterioration appropriately.
• Participate in clinical handovers and multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive documentation in patient medical records.
• Communicate effectively with patients and their families regarding their care, where appropriate.
• Support safe discharge planning and follow-up arrangements.
• Work within relevant legislation, hospital policies, procedures and professional standards.
• Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

You Will Also Bring

• General Registration with AHPRA.
• Minimum PGY3+ clinical experience.
• Previous hospital experience, preferably across medical and/or surgical settings.
• Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification is desirable.
• Strong clinical assessment, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to recognise and respond appropriately to clinical deterioration and emergencies.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement and professional development.
• Ability to work independently while recognising when to seek support or escalate concerns.
• A professional, compassionate and patient-centred approach.
