- Employment duration negotiable
- up to three-year length of training contracts may be offered to successful applicants
- Full time hours or part time hours available
- Positions are available for both junior and more senior registrars
ACEM Trainee and Non-Trainee applicants are encouraged to apply.
Our Registrar cohort is a diverse mix, and we pride ourselves on inclusivity.
We have ACEM Trainees as well as ACCRM, RACGP and Rural Generalist Trainees.
Our unaccredited registrars are a vast array of junior doctors (Post Graduate Year 3 (PGY3) or higher and includes a diverse mix of local Tasmanian graduates, interstate graduates, UK doctors as well as other international medical graduates (IMGs) from all around the world. While UK doctors are the most prevalent international doctors, we have representation from every continent in the world (Except Antarctica).
If you are interstate or overseas this could be your chance of a lifetime to experience what it is to be Tasmanian.
To be Tasmanian is to value quality over quantity. We create, preserve and protect the unusual. With quiet confidence, with passion and perseverance, we pursue the extraordinary. Could you be Tasmanian?
Your leadership path could take you anywhere. What’s different about Tasmania is our culture and lifestyle. Here, you will be encouraged to be your authentic self, to share your wisdom with our emerging generation of medical doctors, and in doing so, find your purpose.
Our remoteness helps drive a culture of invention and human connection, which feels both old-fashioned and… like the only future worth pursuing. Here in Tasmania, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to breathtaking coastlines, National Parks or award-winning restaurants or bars.
Some people surf in the early mornings and go fly fishing on weekends or take photography classes, write novels, sell preserves at the weekly farmers’ markets, learn to mountain bike. They take part in the community, volunteering and serving on boards. And their spouses and children have similar opportunities to thrive in a quieter, safer, more adventurous place.
Something is happening here, and you’re invited to be part of it.
It’s not where you were born. It’s who you are, and who you want to be. Be Tasmanian.
Make It Tasmania | Move for a great lifestyle
Tasmanian | The quiet pursuit of the extraordinary
The Role of the Registrar – Emergency Department
Based in the scenic waterfront area of Hobart, Tasmania, as one of our Registrars you will provide emergency care to patients attending the Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
You will be encouraged to be yourself, to learn, to grow and to develop meaning in your work. The on-the-ground experience you’ll gain throughout the year with us will set in motion a career pathway to choose your own adventure! Whether you choose critical care specialities, General Practice or something else, your practical and academic experiences at the Royal Hobart Hospital ED will empower your future.
Registrar rostering provides flexibility to maintain a work-life balance. Shift and leave requests are incorporated into the roster and pairing of rosters for joint applicants can occur. It is required for our registrars to work a mix of day, evening, night and weekend shifts. Shifts are 9.5-hour duration for day and evenings. Night shifts 10 hours. Full time work is 8 clinical shifts per fortnight plus the 10 hours of paid protected training time per fortnight on top of this. We deliver an education program that is highly valued and runs as a full day each fortnight. Registrars are specifically rostered to these days to avoid clinical demands interfering with their attendance. In addition to the whole-cohort education program, there are separate and dedicated preparation programs for the ACEM primary and fellowship examinations. We also support those undertaking the AST EM StAMPS exam.
You will be joining a department dedicated to the wellbeing of its staff, exemplified by winning the ACEM Wellbeing Award in 2022 for our numerous wellbeing strategies embedded in our daily work practices.
The Emergency Department provides opportunities for you to gain additional qualifications in Emergency Medicine, such as:
- Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program
- Intermediate Emergency Medicine Training Program
- Advanced Emergency Medicine Training Program
- Extended Skills Training for GP Trainees
- Advanced Specialised Training for ACCRM Trainees
Through it all, you will work with a vibrant mix of locals and new Tasmanian adventurers who are all dedicated to making a difference in our state. Tasmania is experiencing a sustained period of growth. Come and be part of an exciting and rewarding place to work where your energy and positive values will contribute to sustained change as we grow. We can’t wait to welcome you into our team!
For ACEM Trainees we offer the following special skills term within the department:
- Medical Education, Research & Geriatric Emergency Medicine
With sufficient time in our department, we can assist with access to other rotations including but not limited to:
ICU, Anaesthetics, Paediatrics, NPICU, Trauma, Hospital at Home, Hyperbaric Medicine and others.

About the Royal Hobart Hospital
The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital in Tasmania and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The hospital provides all general and specialty medical and surgical services as well as paediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry. It is also the state’s tertiary trauma centre.
The Emergency Department (ED) provides a tertiary level service for people with illness or injury 24 hours a day 7 days per week. Our busy ED provides care for >80,000 patients annually with an admission rate of more than 35% and a paediatric case load of 20%.
The RHH Emergency Department has a co-located Emergency Medical Unit (EMU) which is a short stay ward for patients requiring a brief hospital stay (generally less than 24 hours). The EMU has 24 short-stay beds operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a high turnover ward environment and a variety of clinical presentations.
The health demographics of the Tasmanian population means you’ll get to work with a greatly differing population, often more unwell, with more advanced pathology. We have a specialised and highly dedicated allied health team based in the ED to ensure alternated pathways to hospital admission are fully utilised.
The RHH Emergency Department is a fast-paced and energetic environment and there are opportunities for staff to be involved in a variety of projects, clinical and research opportunities.
Essential Requirements
- General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
