About the role: Applications are sought for a February 2027 commencement for a period of 12 months with possible extension. To be eligible for this position you must be PGY4+ at time of commencement.

The Department of Medical Oncology of the Canberra Hospital (TCH) has twelve staff specialists (with some members on fractional appointments). It works closely with the Departments of Radiation Oncology, Surgery and Palliative Care. Three RACP accredited positions are available for advanced core training from 1 February 2027. Advanced trainees will attend three to four outpatient clinics per week and are responsible for ward consultations, weekend inpatient cover and other after-hours on-call responsibilities. They will also support a Cancer Rapid Assessment Unit and the Chemotherapy Day Therapy Unit. They will oversee three basic physician training registrars, a two JMOs and an intern who are responsible for the inpatient care of oncology patients. A broad range of oncology experience will be obtained at Canberra Hospital, with outpatient services based in the Canberra Region Cancer Centre on the hospital campus. All advanced trainees are expected to attend a wide range of multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs), including Head & Neck, Breast, GI, Uro-Oncology, Sarcoma, Melanoma, Neuro-oncology, Gynaecology and Lung Cancer groups in Canberra. These teams are each supported by Cancer Specialist Nurses.
The Unit supports an active clinical trials program with a portfolio of cooperative group studies and industry studies as well as academic research collaborations with other departments in TCH, the ANU and University of Canberra. Research interests of the group are in breast cancer, gastrointestinal oncology, renal cell carcinoma, gynaecological oncology, gastrointestinal stromal tumour, neuroendocrine tumours, melanoma, new drug development in targeted therapies, psychosocial oncology, tissue banking/biomarker development and patterns of care.
Trainees will be involved in the teaching of ANU medical students and Basic Physician trainees. There will also be involvement in the academic activities of the Unit, including clinical review meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings, Grand Rounds, research seminars and journal club. A series of tutorials are provided each year for trainees in medical oncology. There will be opportunities for clinical research and projects leading to presentations and publications. Trainees will be encouraged and supported to attend meetings and conferences
