About the Role:

If you're ready to build genuine surgical experience in a high-volume public health setting, the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) is offering Resident Medical Officer positions for the 2027 clinical year at Lyell McEwin Health Service — one of South Australia's busiest regional acute facilities serving a rapidly growing northern Adelaide community.

What You'll Be Doing

Rotating through surgical units at Lyell McEwin Health Service, delivering safe and evidence-based care under the supervision of experienced surgical consultants and registrars
Assessing, managing, and reviewing surgical inpatients across general and sub-specialty surgical streams
Contributing to ward rounds, operative lists, and after-hours on-call responsibilities as rostered
Engaging in multidisciplinary team care, discharge planning, and clear clinical documentation in line with SA Health standards

What You'll Bring

MBBS or equivalent medical degree with current or eligible registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA)
Completion of at least one postgraduate year (PGY1) prior to commencement in 2027
A genuine interest in surgical training and procedural medicine
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Understanding of, or willingness to learn, SA Health clinical governance and patient safety frameworks
Demonstrated ability to manage competing clinical priorities across a busy acute environment

As per the SA Health Salaried Medical Officers Enterprise Agreement 2025, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12 month allocation as Medical Practitioner will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills and capabilities.

To be eligible for this position, you must have a Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent, registerable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner with General Registration.

The Total Indicative Remuneration figure is calculated taking into account base salary, leave loading and superannuation as well as managerial allowances, professional development or any other allowances where appropriate.

In this role you will have strong interpersonal and communication skills which will enable you to successfully problem solve, resolve conflicts and negotiate, including the ability to engage in difficult conversations, whilst building and maintaining relationships. An ability to effectively manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities and demonstrated resilience within a stressful and complex environment is essential to this role.

Our Local Health Network Sites and Services:

NALHN provides a range of hospital (inpatient), outpatient, community and home-based services across multiple sites in Adelaide’s north and north-eastern suburbs, including Aboriginal health, mental health, and GP services.

Lyell McEwin Hospital – the major hospital in northern Adelaide for emergency care, complex and multi-day surgery, medicine, obstetric, paediatrics and outpatient services.

Modbury Hospital – a general hospital with emergency care, elective surgery, medicine, outpatient and sub-acute services, rehabilitation, geriatric and palliative care.

Mental Health Services – adult and older persons mental health services and statewide forensic mental health services, across hospital and community settings.

Watto Purrunna Aboriginal Primary Health Care Services – provides culturally responsive primary healthcare services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in-hospital and across four community sites.

Primary Health Care Services – including GP Plus sites at Elizabeth, Modbury and Gilles Plains.
