NHW is the major regional health service and specialist referral facility for Northeast Victoria. It serves a population of approximately 102,000, performs over 6,500 procedures a year and has over 19,000 inpatient episodes and 30,000 Emergency Department attendances a year and approximately 700 births per year. We have onsite radiology, pathology and blood bank service. NHW provides a wide range of acute specialist medical and surgical services, an emergency department, critical care unit (ICU, HDU, CCU), obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, specialised aged care, medical oncology services, community rehabilitation, inpatient, community, aged and psycho-geriatric mental health services.
NHW has recently completed a major redevelopment, including the building of a new emergency department, ICU, and expansion of medical and paediatric units
The general medicine unit is staffed by specialist physicians and admits a broad range of medical presentations. Successful applicants have the opportunity to work closely with experienced and dedicated general physicians with a broad range of subspecialty interests and procedural skills in addition to physicians with sub-specialty qualifications in infectious diseases, geriatrics, neurology and gastroenterology.
The unit is supported by a broad range of inpatient specialties including an Intensive Care Unit, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Geriatrics/Rehabilitation, Medical Oncology, and Mental Health services.
The service contributes to undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and to nursing and allied health education. University of Melbourne’s popular rural clinical school is located onsite its education facilities include a simulation lab and skills centre.
