About the role
This role sits within the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, supporting high-impact international laboratory strengthening across the Asia-Pacific region. Working as part of the Global Health Unit, you will contribute to the delivery of the DFAT-funded eLABorate program, focused on enhancing laboratory accuracy, biosafety, and outbreak response capability through targeted education, training, mentoring, and quality improvement initiatives. This is an opportunity to apply your expertise in serology and molecular diagnostics in a setting that directly supports public health outcomes across both Victorian and international health systems.
You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams across VIDRL, including Serology, Viral Identification, and Blood Borne Viruses, as well as key global partners such as the World Health Organisation and regional Ministries of Health. VIDRL, part of a joint venture between the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne, provides critical reference laboratory services, surveillance, and outbreak investigation support. In this fixed-term role, you will contribute to strengthening laboratory networks across the Asia-Pacific while gaining exposure to world-leading infectious diseases expertise and public health research.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead practical, bench‑based serology training in partner laboratories and provide ongoing technical mentorship.
- Prepare, adapt and implement standard operating procedures and training resources suited to regional laboratory settings.
- Support validation and verification of diagnostic tests, algorithms and workflows in line with laboratory quality requirements.
- Participate in workshops, conferences and collaborative meetings and prepare concise training and activity reports.
- Travel internationally for on‑site training and remote delivery of education; work flexibly to meet project timelines.
About You
- Degree in Science, Applied Science or Laboratory Science, specialising in microbiology, virology or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in a clinical and public health laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in infectious diseases serology and molecular diagnostic assays, including manual and semi‑automated enzyme‑linked immunosorbent assay, immunoassay analysers and multiplex polymerase chain reaction.
- Experience delivering practical training and the ability to mentor and build capability in others.
- Highly organised, self‑motivated and able to prioritise tasks to meet external reporting deadlines.
Benefits of Working at RMH
- Join a values-based organisation offering great opportunities for career diversity and professional development, including training and research opportunities, as well as access to mentorship and leadership programs.
- Access to comprehensive health and wellbeing programs, including Employee Assistance and Fitness Passport.
- Up to $12,000 tax free earnings with salary packaging options.
- Generous leave entitlements – five weeks annual leave per year (pro-rata for part time), additional monthly paid day off for full time staff.
- Central Parkville location – onsite car parking options, easily accessible via public transport.
